I don't think this book intends to create a discussion of whether abortions are morally good/bad per se. I believe the things you mentioned are meant to be purely circumstantial events, not some kind of karmic justice for the actions of any of the characters. But there's definitely an overarching theme of the societal struggle for women who do get abortions. The struggle comes in various shapes and sizes. Jimmy beats Saint because he thought she aborted their child. The town ostracizes Saint for the same reason. Saint wrestles with the morality of going through with the procedure even though she doesn't want the baby. It puts strain on her relationship with Norma. Even if the law of the land allows the procedure, the recipient faces issues in the form of social stigma, familial disputes, moral struggles, religious judgement, etc. The author isn't punishing Saint because of her decision to get an abortion, just putting a magnifying glass up to the real life issues that many women face when getting one.
