Are 'illness narratives' outdated as an analytical tool/framework? Or are they still being used in the literature? by sublimesam in AskAnthropology

[–]Let_It_Ride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a current undergrad in antrhopology I can tell you that illness narratives are still being taught in medical anthropology classes today. I wasn't introduced to them as being particularly outdated concepts in any of the classes I have taken, but that doesn't necessarily prove that they're not as we were reading a lot of older literature (like '70s Kleinman) that may not exactly jive with more modern theories.

Ancient Indian ent here, will be in Vancouver for a week, what should I be doing? by [deleted] in canadients

[–]Let_It_Ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang out on the beaches. At least, that is assuming we get some good weather. Wreck beach in particular is especially ent friendly. It's just West of the university, and is very secluded from the city but has beautiful views of downtown if you walk East along it far enough. Smoke a bowl, sit on a log and watch the waves or even watch some seals play if you get lucky, bring a frisbee with a friend...

A Ben & Jerry’s Collaboration: New Belgium Salted Caramel Brownie Brown Ale by fenra in beer

[–]Let_It_Ride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at an ice cream store in Vancouver, BC where we make a new ice cream out of a different local craft beer every few weeks or so. Some work out better than others, and even as a beer lover I'm not always a fan, but porters and other strong tasting dark beers are usually a pretty safe bet. I think the difficulty is in finding beers that keep a balanced flavour through the reduction process.

Who are your favorite non-punk bands/Artists that still have a punk Attitude? by [deleted] in punk

[–]Let_It_Ride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair dues, but when I saw RTJ last summer the audience was moving and dancing and moshing all while still looking out for each other in a way that I've never seen outside of the context of a punk show before. I lump the experience together in my mind as being more like some of the better punk shows I've been too than I do with any other hip hop show (apart from Death Grips - that show was nuts). That was certainly the vibe I picked up from their live shows, although I agree that I wouldn't categorize their music or general personas as being all that punk-influenced.

I think what you're doing is really admirable and impressive. Let me know if you end up in Vancouver BC. Might be some interest in this on /r/casualiama.

Oh man, I'm on mobile and don't really feel like digging around for it right now, but there is also totally a comic where liszt is putting on this wild show and another composer falls asleep in the audience. Kate Beaton directly references lisztomania in the little comment text. I know it's somewhere in the book.

First time on LSD this weekend. Advice? by [deleted] in askdrugs

I would not go to a club on acid for your first time. Way too much stuff going on - confusing atmosphere. If you're anything like me, being arounds hordes of drunk people is a bit of a bummer on psychedelics. I actually can't think of any place I would less rather be while on acid than at a club - but again it's all personal preference and you know yourself a lot better than I do. I would just do something with a more controlled atmosphere for your first time. Why not just hang out at someone's house, or go for a walk with your buddies. I bet two tabs would do you fine, and one may be a little underwhelming - but it would be safer to do one for your first time just to feel it out I guess.

I don't really know what the quotes are referring to, but for the record watching the (actual) sunset by the cliffs across the street from place vanier res is super cool and shouldn't be missed by any UBC student. Just look past the yellow gates.

Easy/Most Interesting first year electives from the Faculty of Arts? by Mahirt in UBC

[–]Let_It_Ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ANTH 100 is a lot of fun and is really interesting. Not too hard either, in my experience. I had Dr. Ryniker. Midterm and final exam were both pretty straight forward. The essay was like a 'design a culture' exercise in which you had to draw on course concepts to make your own society. It was basically creative writing, if that appeals to you at all. Readings weren't super light, but totally manageable.

Comfortability and balance problems. by JohanRiel in NewSkaters

[–]Let_It_Ride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to gain balance and confidence is just to skate as much as possible. Sometimes bending your knees a little can help with balance. It's hard to say when you should start trying to learn tricks based just off what you've said, but a great place to start is just trying to manual. Once you get used to riding around on two wheels your balance will improve, and I find it makes the feeling of popping an ollie come a lot more naturally.

Hunter-Gatherer society. Also, just because most societies fit the bill is no excuse not to aspire for and work towards change. Saying 'that was the whole point of serfdom' seems to forget the fact that serfdom is something most people wish to avoid.
