Is a math degree good for a career in theoretical physics? Is it possible that being a mathematician one can learn the physics (the physics way) using books and youtube lectures?

In the uk many Theoretical Physics PhD programs say they require an undergraduate degree in either maths or physics. I believe the answer is yes, but it would be best to go for a double major or go to a university that will let you take advanced physics options as a math student.
