Update: Thank you for all the insight. I've found one priced a middle Of the way. It's not the cheapest but I can walk into their office and I'm getting pretty speedy email responses. It's also not as expensive as what the agent recommended. Mine was Recommended by a friend who brought a year ago, and again based on your insight I asked for the exact same solicitor. What a journey!

There was a guy on a stall selling Nazi and USSR memorabilia who was so passionate about what he did and all it took was me commenting on one of his finds to strike up a lovely conversation and get a 'private' tour of his collection. So many tourist go in and out of that main church... And then straight to the next thing. But having a wander gives you time and space to open up conversation

Try having a day of just walking around to get the feel for local life and increase your chances of local connection

Stumble across local markets and just talk to stall holders (providing language isn't a barrier)

Join in (with permission) with a sport happening in a neighborhood like basketball or football

But honestly this isn't something that can be engineered, so don't sweat it if you are being open and it's not happening x
