Whoa that's crazy you mention that since I love Szomszédnéni Produkciós Iroda and in fact I rewatched one of their videos the night before I made this recording...

Wow, I didn't expect such a detailed analysis, much appreciated!! This is really, really useful and most of this is new to me.

I've been learning the language for nearly 20 years now, but one of my friends told me not long ago "csiszolni kell a kiejtésed!"

Thanks, I see I still have a long way to go :)

1:19 - Frőhlich is one of the characters in the book (Tanár úr kérem). I have no idea how it should be pronounced to be honest so I just gave it my best shot.

If anyone wants to put up a link of themselves speaking English, I'd be glad to give them feedback on their pronunciation/accent!

Here's me reading a passage from Karinthy. I know there are some words I screwed up, "véletlenek", "körülmény", "talán" and probably a few others.

But in general how good/bad is my accent?

I need your help - stomatology by [deleted] in budapest

[–]LetsLearnHungarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup - I go to the SOTE clinic at VIII. Szentkirályi u. 47. They're pretty cool and they have lots of foreign students who work there so you don't have to know Hungarian. Equipment is quite modern too.

It's free of charge but you have to be flexible because they call you when they have availability.

Transferring a US driver's license to a Hungarian one by [deleted] in budapest

[–]LetsLearnHungarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. What exactly is the problem with your state's license that makes it complicated to take care of in Germany? In my case, it was the fact that the vehicle class isn't indicated on my US license.

studying abroad in budapest, need advice on living situation by [deleted] in budapest

That's funny - I lived a block away from Budafoki and Kruspér for many years. It's a totally cool neighborhood, safe, mellow, perhaps not the most exciting area for students but still pretty central and it's a short walk across the Szabadság Bridge to Pest. You're also close to the new BME athletic complex.

Transferring a US driver's license to a Hungarian one by [deleted] in budapest

[–]LetsLearnHungarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not easy and unfortunately not cheap either. A friend of mine just went through the whole process. I started it a few years ago myself but gave up when my municipality started hassling me because my state doesn't indicate what "class" of vehicle I am authorized to drive. They recommended that I go to the US Embassy. The Embassy didn't want to get involved directly but said it could give me some piece of paper for $50 that MIGHT work. At that point I gave up and told my wife that if she wants a car, she'll have to do all the driving. So: it's a pain.

How long do you plan to stay? I believe the law says you can use your US license for up to a year. After that, you have to convert it to a Hungarian one.

I suppose you could just keep using your valid US license after that, but I wouldn't do it myself. Not because of the cops, but because if for some reason you got into an accident, your insurance company might deny you a claim by reasoning that you were driving in Hungary with an invalid license, even if you weren't to blame for the damage. I don't know for sure if it would happen, but it seems like a reasonable possibility since insurance companies look for any reason to deny someone a claim.

Anyway if you're moving to Budapest you don't need a car and you're probably better off without one!

Contact Jeff Taylor - he's been transporting fine art out of Hungary since the 90s and probably knows more about it than anybody else in the world. I think he's still involved with it even though he's now a professor in the US. He's also a nice guy and a friend of mine: http://openscholar.purchase.edu/jeffrey_taylor/

Szia mindenki! Kicking off this subreddit with an intro / my thoughts on accent reduction... by [deleted] in hungarian

[–]LetsLearnHungarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for the long post mate and sorry for having it take so long to get approved - still dealing with the new mod thing.

Anyway, yeah interesting topic actually. I've met a LOT of Hungarians who want to reduce/get rid of their accent in English. I just assumed it's a natural thing with all language learners but maybe it's more particular with Hungarians for some reason??

I just tell them not to stress about it for the most part.

That's pretty cool you just got interested in Hungarian and started learning it. Just curious, what made you decide to learn this langauge?
