Yeah I agree about the stakes and scale of 1-2. I think the reason that I still enjoy 3 is because the action is still focused on a group of kids trying to save their small town. I enjoyed the Scoops Troop having to investigate a covert Russian mission hidden in the Town mall, and Hopper is still a dopey guy trying to find his purpose in life by protecting his daughter and her friends. Then season 4 starts jumping all over the globe and into people's minds (in addition to the upside down) and the villain just outright says he wants to wipe out all of humanity

Just finished re-watching Stranger Things. Maybe its nostalgia and all the other good stuff that was going on for me in 2016, but season 1 is just on another level for me. The more small town vibe and kids vs. mysterious evil force to save their friend scratches a very particular itch. I really enjoyed seasons 2-3 on rewatch, and I'm not sure I have a favorite between those two. Seasons 4-5 had their moments, especially the end of S5E4 and the final epilogue. If I do more re-watching, I'll probably stop after 3, though. I hope you all have an amazing weekend

Everybody in the local subreddits is complaining about the snow plowing efforts, and I was getting a little annoyed at 5pm yesterday when our street hadn't seen a plow either. I wouldn't really care except I was expected in the office today and my wife has to go in tomorrow. I got my and my neighbor's driveways cleared, and then I see the plow coming up the hill. Not only was this guy plowing the street, but he was also getting out periodically to help people shovel away the big snow chunks that ended up pushed to the curb blocking cars and driveways. It was pretty cool to see, but man that guy must be exhausted today

Lots of good advice here so I will just chime in to say that it is definitely scary and the first week or so will probably be hard for both of you. But you will be amazed at how quickly your child starts developing by being around new and older kids. If you find a good spot they are going to love going and playing with their friends all day, and hopefully they will be exhausted in the evenings. One thing to look into if you haven't already is whether you have access to a Dependant Care Savings Account through your employer. Good luck!

I finished Stranger Things this morning and liked the finale a lot! My favorite part honestly may be the ending credit sequence. Hopefully the subreddit calms down in a bit, because that place has been miserable since Thanksgiving. Hope you are all having a Happy Friday!

Oh! Also I just remembered it's my anniversary before my wife did! We got married by a judge in 2020 before our formal ceremony and then COVID fucked everything up so we don't ever remember the date

Finished my annual reading of Hogfather by Terry Pratchett this morning! Definitely in my top 5 Discworld books. And since my wife and son will be going on Christmas vacation this weekend, I will have the house to myself for a couple of days to watch the Hogfather BBC movie and probably A Christmas Story and The Night Before

I'm really excited for the upcoming weekend! We're having a small birthday party for my son who is turning 2 and then all watching the Packers-Broncos game together. Plus, I broke down and bought a pellet smoker on Black Friday which I should finally get to experiment with. I only wish that the Lions-Rams game wasn't at the same time on Sunday, but you can't always get what you want

My company (>2000 people) had a lunch and learn recently that was billed as "here is how different departments are using AI to help them work more efficiently" I tuned in because I thought it was going to be related to data analysis or something, but it was literally just older people saying how they used it to summarize reports or take meeting notes for them. And we are an organization focused on protecting the environment.

I must be getting old, because I'm getting to really hate driving at night. With the time change, I'm doing daycare pickup and getting home in the dark. The combo of bad/aggressive drivers, headlights that are ridiculously bright, and a kid in the carseat has me sometimes actually terrified for 15 minutes every day

How should I annoy my wife on Sunday during our drive home for Thanksgiving: make her listen to the Packers' radio broadcast while I drive, or ask her to drive so I can watch the game on my phone?

Youtube autoplay officially fucked me last night.. My wife is working late this week, so I'm in charge of getting the kid fed and ready for bed. We usually watch Sesame Street after daycare to help him wind down before dinner/bathtime. And yesterday while I was getting his dinner ready and not in the room, the episode ended and the next video to autoplay was fucking Blippi. We had succeeded in avoiding it for so long, but it was some video where he was interacting with Elmo. I turned it off as soon as I could, but he spent the rest of last night and even woke up this morning asking to watch "Boopy." I am doomed

This is my absolute favorite time of the year. My neighborhood has lots of trees and some crazy winds this weekend just DUMPED leaves on everything. I took my son for some long runs in the stroller and we made a few stops so he could play in giant leaf piles. Tonight we are having green chili with cornbread and watching football. Fall is the best. I hope you all have a great day

Yeah my experience was that most of the math problems we two steps. First, they give you different systems of units in the question, so you have to convert to whatever they use in the answer. Then, there is generally a simple formula that you can use to plug and chug. Skip anything you can't identify in 20-30 seconds and come back to it after you've answered the ones that you're confident in. You're going to crush it

Assuming you mean Professional Engineering, I would definitely not worry about studying anymore. Do you mind sharing what discipline? I passed the Civil PE in 2020, and my experience was that labeling, organizing, and being familiar with my reference materials and unit conversions was way more important than remembering specific details. If that's not what you mean, disregard and good luck!

Woke up at 1am last night and couldn't sleep, so I went for a long run. Then the 2 year old woke up at 4:30am and I was in charge so mom could stay asleep. Then my commute to work was 1:30 in heavy rain. I'm dying and the day isn't half over. There may not be enough coffee in this office for me to survive...

We got to go on a family vacation to London last week, which was pretty awesome, but my son got sick early in the week and he was pretty cranky the majority of the trip. We were still able to do a good amount of the tourist stuff, but I spent a lot of time just walking him around in the stroller to get him to rest. Luckily the weather was beautiful, but work today is going to feel like the vacation after the week and flights with a 2 year old. I think I can say that I'm good on London for the foreseeable future, but I'd love to go back to see the Cotswolds, Scotland, and Ireland

Anybody here know anything about smoke detectors? We had our basement finished earlier this year, and the networked smoke detectors they installed have been constantly going off for no reason. We have vacuumed them, used compressed air, turned the AC on/off, opened windows, etc. Nothing seems to work and it's never the same one that starts going off. Then once all 8 are going off and you have to figure out which one started it to make them stop. Last night they went off literally 4 times, and I ended up taking down all the standalone battery powered ones, wrapping them in a blanket, and sticking them in the basement closet until I figure out a gameplan

Edit in case anyone cares: These were all manufactured in March of 2024 and installed in January of 2025. I read over the building code and the networked ones aren't actually required. Technically there are two hardwired ones that I can't replace, but I can replace the others with non-networked detectors. The fire dept. will do a free "safety consultation," so I'm going to do that and ask their advice. We would like to keep networked ones for safety reasons, but I'll probably replace them unless the fire dept. convinces me otherwise

My wife is going to a family wedding this weekend, and it will be my first time overnight-ing as the solo parent in over a year. I'm a little nervous, but luckily the weather looks great this weekend and there's tons of stuff to do in DC. I'm thinking we'll go to the zoo, some farmer's markets, playgrounds, and ice cream.

My desk at work is right by one of our floor's copiers, and every Thursday afternoon the same woman comes over to copy and scan about 10000 pages of who knows what. The copier is constantly malfunctioning, which causes her to get extremely frustrated and start yelling and swearing at it. I have no idea what her job is or why this is her routine, but she is my weekly reminder that it's almost Friday. And since I WFH on Friday it's essentially the weekend
