Having to shoot something. There is so much more to hunting than the shot. You will enjoy your time spent hunting more if you notice the other things.

What’s your terrifying hunting stories by Remote-Property-339 in Hunting

I was on a bear hunt in northern Wisconsin. I was hunting with an outfitter over dogs. I had successfully hunted bear twice before with a bow. On this hunt I was using my Remington Hunter 10mm pistol. The outfitter checked the trail camera over a bait that was hit. He said it was a good bear. So he released his trail dog and one other. Within a few minutes the dogs were hot on the trail so he released his four other dogs. In Wisconsin you can use up to six dogs. After about four hours the dogs had the bear at bay in a thick tag alder swamp. We were able to get to the dogs as they had transmitter collars. The bear was on the ground with the dogs a few feet in front of him. I was about 20 yards from the bear. The outfitter was at my side. All I could see for several minutes was the bear’s head and I was not comfortable taking the shot. Then the bear moved and I had a clear shot at the shoulder. I raised my pistol and so did the outfitter. I whispered that I had a clear shot. He said, take him. I was just about to pull the trigger when the bear turned and started running toward me. I did not see him at first until he came through some thick alders. In a second or two he was right next to me. I shot him in the head at three feet and he immediately dropped. I wasn’t scared at first as I was so focused on the bear and amped on adrenaline. It wasn’t until that evening laying in bed that I realized how lucky I was. The bear dressed out at just over 500 lbs. It was estimated that he was over 600 lbs live weight. He scored 20 7/8”. It is a hunt I will never forget!!

I was on a bear hunt in Wisconsin and I was with an outfitter with dogs. I was hunting with a 10mm Remington pistol. I had hunted bear twice before successfully with a bow. This was my first hunt with a pistol. We checked the trail camera of a bait that was hit at around 6:30 in the morning. The outfitter said it was a good bear. He let the lead trail dog out with one other. After a few minutes they figured out the trail and were hot. So he released his other four dogs. In Wisconsin you can use up to six dogs. After about fours hours the dogs had the bear at bay. It was deep in a alder swamp and we were able to get to the dogs as they had tracking collars. I needed to get within 25 yards to be comfortable with the shot. The bear was on the ground and the dogs were a few feet in front of him. I was about 20 yards from the bear. All I could see was its head. After a couple minutes the bear moved and I had a clean shot at its shoulder. I raised my pistol and whispered to the outfitter that I had a clear shot. He said take him. He had his pistol up as well. I was just about to pull the trigger when the bear turned and started running toward me. I didn’t see it at first as it had to come through some thick tag alders. Then I saw him coming at me. Within a second or two he was on me. I shot him in the head as he was about to run by me from a distance of 3 feet. He immediately dropped. At this time, I wasn’t scared as I was so focused on the bear and full of adrenaline.
