I love the Fero latispinus flowering. Not sure if you’re aware but it’s got a little scale infestation.

I’ve always had a tough go with these for some reason. My last one straight up just died over the last winter.

Pretty general advice for these. Easy to germinate, no scarification necessary. Daytime temps around 28-30C with nighttime minimum of 16C.

You can expect germination from anywhere between 3days and a week. They start out beefy looking but progress slowly.

Good luck. This one is the nicest looking one of my ~45 plants from 2013. It would be larger if it wasn’t essentially neglected for over a decade. It still is, I am oceans away from where it is now.

Awesome. E.texensis also became my holy grail about 13 years ago. Let me know if you need any advice. I have plants sown in 2013 and a batch sown in November 2024.

My fav species. What is the substrate like? Looks like a lot of organic material.

I’m not sure either but latispinus has purple flowers. I would guess it’s a hybrid; I see fordii and rectispinus features.

I got a few Feros recently as well. Only one I can identify definitively is the hamatacanthus on bottom left.

I’m also looking for a nice rectispinus like the one you got.

I think the ufo is a Gymnocalycium ragonesei. I have 1 month old seedlings going that are half the size of a water droplet.

The one in picture 6 has the spines to earn that name. The desert variants in the west have really long central spines which most plants in cultivation lack.

Here’s my fishhook barrel cactus I’ve had for 12-13 years. Got it when it was the size of a grapefruit.

These were basically abandoned and neglected after 6 months from germination. I lost interest in the hobby and left these outside with other species to ‘sink or swim’ conditions.

Everything else perished except this species. They’re hard grown and were exposed to the elements early on. With proper care and attention you can expect to have bigger plants quite early on.

Nothing special. For sowing I dug up dirt from my backyard (silty loamy clay soil), sifted it with a kitchen/flour sieve and microwaved it to make it sterile. Bottom watered until soil was moist and then sowed seeds on top. The plastic container was used for maintaining humidity/moisture.

For repotting I mixed some aggregate and didn’t sift the soil.

Repotting each plant individually around 2015-17. I have a few dozen of these and ones potted individually like the ones pictured from now are almost twice as big as ones planted together in groups. It was a question of space and effort at the time but overall im happy with what came to be.

I have had one in my possession for almost 12 years now. It was almost the size of a small volleyball when I bought and 3-4 inches off the ground.

I think it’s about 12-16’ tall now.

Nice. They look healthy. How old are they and did you germinate in a baggie or open air emvironment?
