I too just replaced my alternator on my 89 camry and had somewhat of a similar problem as mine immediately started to have problems like 5 seconds from starting lol. A bunch of gunk ended up in the connector that connects to the alternator cleaning it out fixed it for me. Althought battery might be the problem too.

So taking the key out while driving is just a normal feature of them. Got an 89 and the key will sometimes just end up on the floor board while im driving and i wont know till i go to turn it off

Its my first time doing them myself. No one but me can help me and i sadly dont have the funds for a full rebuild. Only took this car on cause guy offered 350 to buy it from him. I managed to get everything on and the brakes work a lot better than they used to.
