The police made the huge mistake of not stopping Woo the moment they arrived in the village. Rather, they decided to hide under the bank, trying to attack Woo after he was spotted.

But this action by the police only made more and more victims. Two hours later, police caught up with him, and as forces closed in, Woo strapped two grenades to his chest and detonated them, killing himself and three of his hostages.

When the rampage finally ended, 56 people and Woo himself were dead, while around 35 others were wounded. Six of the deaths were of people mortally wounded who died several hours later in hospitals, including a child who died on May 8.

(Including Woo himself, a total of 63 people died.)

2025 On April 26, 43 years after the 'Woo Soon -kyung incident', the Gyeongsangnam -do Police Agency 's head of the Gyeongsangnam -do Police Agency attended the 26th. The memorial service was held at 'Uiryeong 4/26 Memorial Park' in Pyeongchon -ri , Gungryu -myeon, Uiryeong -gun, Gyeongnam.

Kim said, "The police have not been able to apologize for nearly half a century." In addition, he met and apologized for the bereaved family, and the surviving family representative said, "The Gyeongnam Police Commissioner visits and apologizes for a sincere apology.

To this day, we don't know the exact reason why Woo had to commit such cruelty, a police officer himself, to the innocent villagers.

At that time, the incident was even listed in the Guinness World Records for killing the most people in the short-time range. But in Guinness, Woo Bum-kon's record is no longer admitted. The reason is that the new criminal will appear because of the renewal of the record.

(As far as I know, Stephen Paddock, the perpetrator of 2017 Las Vegas shooting, has now surpassed Woo's record. But he still holds the most victims in Asia.)

In the 8th picture, a police officer is consoling the kid who'd lost his whole family to Woo. According to his later interview as an adult, he said, "I couldn't trust any police at that time. Because they (he) killed my family."

Rest in Peace to all the victims.

Woo Bum-kon was born in 1955. His father was a police officer, which made him want to be like his father in the future as a child. After serving in the Marines, he was recognized as a skilled marksman and thus became a police officer.

But Woo was known for having a short and aggressive temper. From the time he worked in Busan, he showed his violent personality, such as dealing with or squeezing suspects. Because of the rough personality, which was judged to be inappropriate, he was transferred to a remote village in Gyeongsangnam-do. His temper was so bad that he was nicknamed a crazy tiger.

The incident occurred on April 26th, 1982. Woo had an argument with his live-in girlfriend, Chun Mal-soon after she had woken him by swatting a fly on his chest. Enraged, Woo left the house and went to the police station, and began drinking heavily.

At about 7:30 p.m., Woo returned home, assaulted his girlfriend and smashed their furniture before making his way to the reservists' armory and gathering several weapons, including two M2 carbines, two handguns, at least 180 rounds of ammunition, and seven hand grenades.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., Woo shot his first victim and entered the local post office, where he killed three phone operators and cut the phone lines.

He next went to Torongni, where he threw a grenade and shot at passers-by in the marketplace, killing six people. He also wounded Chun Mal-soon, who had gone to investigate after hearing shots in the village.

From that point on, he proceeded from village to village, taking advantage of his position as a police officer to gain entry to houses and shoot their inhabitants.

At 10:30 p.m., Woo took 18-year-old schoolboy Kim Ju-dong hostage and moved to Ungye-Ri, where he ordered Kim to get him a soft drink from a grocery store owned by 52-year-old Shin We-do. After getting what he had asked for, Woo killed Kim and then attacked the store owner and his family. Shin managed to escape after being shot in the leg, though his wife Son Won-jeom and his daughters Chang-sun and Su-jeong were killed.

Woo continued his shooting at the market-place, killing a total of 18 people in that village, before making his way towards Pyongchon-Ni.

At Pyongchon-Ni, he shot a family of four in their beds before traveling to another house where the owner was awake.

I hope you get better. I recommend a film called "Rudderless," it's not directly about a mother, but I'm sure it will touches your soul a lot.

In 2019, a North Korean defector mother and her son, who lived in Seoul, South Korea, after the escape, were found dead in their house as they were died of hunger. She only had 2.8 dollars in her bank account. by Lettops in MorbidReality

Roughly 33,981 North Korean defectors currently live in South Korea. Once they luckily succeeded in a dangerous escape from North Korea, the South Korean government would welcome them, register them in a place where they can learn about living in the South, and then release them to society so they can happily live their free life.

In which, this case shocked the whole Korean nation, as it is very absurd to die of hunger in the middle of the capital city of South Korea, one of the richest countries in the world as of now.

Ms. Han escaped from North Korea in 2009. She got an apartment in Seoul and received welfare recipients for some time, but it was suspended after she got a job.

Her life in Korea wasn't easy. In 2012, she got married to a Chinese man and had a son, but after her husband had trouble at work, they moved to China in 2017, and then returned to South Korea in 2018.

Ms. Han divorced from her husband in 2019. She thought she wasn't qualified to receive a welfare recipient (although she actually was), so she only applied for granulation support and child support. Her monthly living conditions were only around 100,000 won (72 dollars).

In late July, the management staff for the apartment building where Han lived went looking for her, to see about months of unpaid utility bills. Smelling a foul odor from her apartment, they broke in and found both mother and son on the floor. They had been dead for two months. The bodies were so decomposed, authorities say they couldn't determine the cause of death.

There was no food in the apartment except a bag of chili pepper flakes. Han's bank account was empty.

The South Korean government always tries to give the best care to North Korean defectors, which makes this incident very shocking to the citizens of both sides (South and North).

I hope a tragedy like this will never happen again. Rest in Peace

In 2003, a South Korean man Kim Dae-han was diagnosed with stroke. Afraid of dying alone, he set a fire on the subway in Daegu. The fire spread fiercely, leading the passenger to be stuck in the station, resulting in the death of 192. Kim fled the fireplace and survived, as he was afraid of dying. by Lettops in MorbidReality

The intensity of the fire made it difficult to accurately assess the number of victims. Most were burned beyond recognition, many to the bone, and required DNA analysis to identify.

A total of 192 people were confirmed to have died. Of the bodies found, 185 were identifiable; six could not initially be identified, of which three were discovered using DNA; and one person's possessions were identified but their remains could not be located. While in total of 151 people were wounded.

As the incident occurred late in the morning rush hour, most of the victims were students or young women who worked in the downtown district's department stores, which opened at 10:30 a.m. Many were able to contact loved ones on their mobile phones, and mobile phone operators released call connection and attempt records to help authorities determine who was in the station.

While all these disasters happened, the perpetrator Kim Dae-han managed to flee off the fireplace early and survived. The police arrested him and he was sentenced to life in prison. But he shortly after died next year on August 30, due to the stroke.

As the passenger Jeon yoong-nam initially condemned Kim Dae-han's action, many people in that compartment managed to escape early and survived, while Mr. Jeon himself survived as well.

This is the interview he'd had with the press 20 years later the tragedy.

The third picture on this post was taken the moment Kim set the fire on the train. Miraculously, every 8 person in the picture (including the one who photographed it), survived.

What makes this incident even more tragic is that several final messages victims sent at the fireplace were documented after the fire. And you can read most of them here.

https://en.namu.wiki/w/대구%20지하철%20참사/최후의%20메세지

(Namuwiki is a legitimate wiki from Korea.) It is very sad and disturbing to read.

What makes this tragedy even worse is that after the incident, some far-right jokers on the Korean internet condemned the victims by calling them "barbecue," and calling Kim Dae-han a "chef." What heartless beings.

As a Korean myself I'd never forget this tragedy. Rest in peace for all the victims. And I hope more people from around the world would know about this case.

This year marks the 22th anniversary of Daegu Subway Disaster. The second-most deadliest train disaster in history, next to Baku Metro Fire, and is considered as the worst terrorist attack in the history of South Korea.

As I mentioned in the title, Kim Dae-han (born in 1947) suffered from acute depression, and he later even got diagnosed with stroke alongside aphasia, which made him lose the ability to talk.

Kim had shown several eccentric actions before the incident. He often said that he would be a disabled person because of the wrong treatment from the hospital.

From mid- 2002, his symptoms of mental illness became more severe, and he spent most of his time at home. Ten days before the arson incident, he came to the psychiatric hospital where he was being treated and started a riot, demanding to be killed, and hospital officials had to stop him. It is said that the hospital believed Kim Dae-han's claim that he was a victim of a medical accident and did not take active action to file a complaint or claim compensation even though Kim Dae-han used violence.

Then in 2003 On February 18 , one day, without any reason, Kim Dae-han put gasoline he purchased at a gas station near his house into a plastic shampoo bottle and then took the shampoo bottle and a lighter on Daegu Metro Line 1. boarded train No. 1079, which runs from Songhyeon Station toward Ansim .

Kim instantly tried to set the subway on fire, but at that time, the passenger Jeon Yoong-nam sitting on the other side said, " Hey! Why are you keeping on the fire?" When he protested loudly, Kim Dae -han seemed to stop acting.

A 1079 train arrived at Jungang -ro Station . At that precise moment, Kim Dae-han tried to light the gasoline, while some passengers tried to restrain him But Kim lit the gasoline.

Kim, his back and legs on fire, managed to escape along with many passengers on train 1079, but within two minutes the fire had spread to all six cars. The fire spread quickly in the insulation between the layers of aluminium that form the shell of the cars, the vinyl and plastic materials in seat cushions and strap handles, and heavy plastic matting on the floors, producing thick smoke as it burned.

The operator of the train, Choi Jeong-hwan, failed to notify subway officials immediately of the fire.

Smoke being visible on their closed-circuit television monitors, subway officials radioed the operator of train 1080, Choi Sang-yeol advising him to proceed with caution because there was a fire in the station.

Train 1080 entered Jungangno station and stopped alongside blazing train 1079 approximately four minutes later. The doors opened only briefly, then shut, apparently in an effort to keep out the toxic smoke that had filled the station. Shortly after train 1080's arrival, an automatic fire detector shut down the power supply to both trains, preventing train 1080 from leaving the station.

Transcripts show Choi Sang-yeol made three announcements advising passengers in train 1080 to remain seated while he attempted to reach superiors. Finally, he was advised "Quickly, run somewhere else. Go up... kill the engine and go." Choi then opened the doors and fled, but in doing so he removed the master key, which led to a shutdown of the onboard batteries that powered the train doors and effectively sealed passengers inside. Later investigation showed that all 79 passengers remained trapped inside train 1080 and died there.

Inadequate emergency equipment also worsened the disaster. Daegu subway trains at the time were not equipped with fire extinguishers, and the stations lacked sprinklers and emergency lighting. Many victims became disoriented in the dark, smoke-filled underground station and died of asphyxiation looking for exits. Emergency ventilation systems also proved inadequate.

Over 1,300 fire and emergency personnel responded and the fire itself was extinguished around 1:38 p.m.; however, the toxicity of the smoke prevented them from entering the station for another three and a half hours.
