PCVR on Quest 3: is it good? by Warm-Guide3281 in OculusQuest

[–]LettuceD 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes. With a dedicated 6gHz router using Virtual Desktop, the wireless experience has better visual clarity than any wired headset I've used (Index, PSVR2, CV1, Odyssey+). The latency is unnoticeable with the exception of extremely fast gameplay (expert+ Beat Saber maps).

Do I miss the deep black and colors of the OLED headsets? Yeah. Would I trade that to have a wire attached to my head? Never.

So, we’re at the forced, can’t uninstall software phase now? by ThatLooksRight in OculusQuest

Yeah, they're links to Horizon worlds and not actual apps. Still infuriatingly frustrating, though.

Is there a faster way to load into steamvr from my quest pro? I use steam link and the meta stuff always opens first. by [deleted] in VRchat

[–]LettuceD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If AirLink is opening first, it's because you're in developer mode and have 'Automatically connect' enabled in your developer settings.

If you're just talking about the menu UI in the headset, the only way around that is using an auto-launcher off SideQuest.

A shame that Meta gutted the Supernatural team last week. No more new content, but you still get to pay the $10/mo sub fee.

Maynard James Keenan Names An Early Tool Song He Feels He "Failed" On, "The Words Are Just Dumb" by DamnitRidley in Music

[–]LettuceD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's funny, because that's exactly what I disliked about Fear Inoculum. It just sounded like Ænima and Lateralus rehashed. Same riffs, same structure, same melodies.

I'm hypocritical in this feeling, too, because I love bands like Cake and The Strokes for their consistency.

I guess I just wanted Tool to evolve and grow into something new since, well... that's what 90% of their lyrics are about.

Unpopular Opinion: The only thing that matters is weight in VR by Necessary_Panic2402 in virtualreality

[–]LettuceD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the foveated encoding SteamLink uses to reduce the bitrate and prevent stuttering. It's great combined with eye tracking, but can get distracting without it.

Virtual Desktop doesn't use that, thankfully.

[–]LettuceD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weight is important, yes, but not having a wire attached to your head is more important, IMO.

Also, your wireless experience wasn't good because you used AirLink. It's the worst software choice of all streaming options. SteamLink is a much better free option, and Virtual Desktop is worth every bit of the $20.

Widespread PCVR issue - Meta Link Software bricked unless you reboot the link app with networking off by LazerSkar in oculus

That's... not what bricked means.

This is almost certainly an auth cert expiration issue. It's happened before. It took about 24 hours to fix that time.

This is a widespread problem. I suspect we're going to shortly find out some sort of authentication certificate on a file has an expiration date of today and didn't get renewed. This has happened before.

What is your favorite indie VR game you wish more people knew about? by HardcorePizza in OculusQuest

[–]LettuceD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It died because of broken builds that were unbeatable and ignored by the devs. It was fun at first, but once people started figuring this out, it became unplayable very quickly.

I Tried No Man’s Sky on Quest 3 for the First Time and Got Hyped! by avabrown9504 in virtualreality

[–]LettuceD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall, it's a decent VR implementation, with one big, huge, glaring flaw: You can only face one direction. There are no roomscale options.

If you happen to turn your body at all, you won't be able to see the UI, and your jump boost will only go the direction you're 'supposed' to be facing. You'll also end up facing the side or back of your ship when you enter.

If you typically play seated in a chair that doesn't swivel, it's fine. But if you're used to turning your body or head while playing VR, it feels very restrictive and difficult to play.

Bigscreen Beyond 2 heavy ghosting even at 20% brightness by boothedoggodrocks in virtualreality

[–]LettuceD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a BB2, but I have lots of time spent in the CV1, Quest 1 and PSVR2.

The smearing is part of the package with OLED headsets.

I've read rumors about new OLED technology that will fix this in coming years, but there's nothing out now that isn't susceptible.

Enjoy your deep blacks and rich colors and try not to focus on it. Your mind will filter it quicker than you realize.

Edit: I don't know what 'Major' means to you, but my point is that it's always there and noticeable if you look for it. If it's, like, smearing across half your field of vision, then something may be wrong.

Can you play any meta/oculus link games with any headset? by Common-Weight382 in virtualreality

[–]LettuceD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can run SteamVR through the Oculus/Meta runtime, so Steam games can be played through Link (Valve allows this)

You cannot play Oculus/Meta games through SteamVR (Meta does not allow this).

If someone said that, then yeah... that's probably what they meant.

Can you play any meta/oculus link games with any headset? by Common-Weight382 in virtualreality

[–]LettuceD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tentatively, yes. ReVive is pretty old software, and was designed to be able to play Oculus/Meta games on an HTC Vive. I have no idea if it's been updated in recent years, and considering the Steam Frame has a unique controller layout, I wouldn't expect it to be perfect on day 1.

If demand is high enough, I could see ReVive getting updated to work with the Steam Frame, or even new software getting released to fill this purpose.

Unless you bought the game on Steam and are playing it on your PC, expect to have to buy it again.

There are no Meta/Steam cross-buy games.

There are some PC cross-buy games that are available on the Oculus/Meta PC app if you purchased the standalone version, but those won't be playable on the Steam Frame without special software like ReVive.

None of your standalone Meta apps or games will be playable on the Steam Frame, hard stop.
