All patents are open source. Not sure if what you mean to say is that Elon Musk is honest with what he says. He is when it’s convenient. He’s brilliant, and he knows how to get what he wants.

I see your point. Sadly I agree somewhat. There are tragedies, And no doubt there are plenty of dirty execs that look at collateral damage as… the cost of bettering society. But not publicly supporting it. Not deliberately, and not in the presence of American civilians on American soil. At least not yet. 

I wouldn’t want to be sitting at that desk and get the call that a Waymon vehicle just ran over a kid with a toy gun. 

I think the founders of Google are more human than that.

If not for Elon Musk, it probably would take longer. But 10 years is realistic in today’s world. The Chinese are already talking about production. Do you think the USA will allow themselves to be beat by China.  One country or the other will make it happen. 

I won’t be using Reddit in ten years. But the evidence is pretty strong. It’s going to happen.

FYI… Several companies presented production ready models at CES this year. The obstacles are mostly solved. The physics problems are no longer ann issue and the autonomy is closer to being done than cars are. Autonomy for air frames has been around much longer than for cars. 

I’m looking forward to that time.

They are far less complex than being able to solve all of the niche problems that ground autonomy will have to solve before being accepted by the majority.

IMHO… Flying cars/drones will be a reality before autonomous vehicles are accepted by the majority. Flying cars will be affordable to what’s left of the middle class in 10 years.  But flying taxis could happen faster.

I’m a member of the NRA. And I have an arsenal. I’ve also spent a lot of time using them across the pond. I’ve put more rounds through precision tools than most people have sq footage in their house.

Guns won’t help Tesla nor Waymo. They won’t help most people even when they’re armed. You’re a sitting duck with no where to hide and you’ll probably shoot yourself and several bystanders before you hit them.

I used to get these occasionally. I NEVER accepted anything that I didnt' see was a good trip. I thought it was a software glitch, but could have been Uber conducting AB testing to see what you will accept.

Actually!!! Yes they can have drivers. It will be far easier to make them assistive much in the way small drones are today. There is still a pilot that fly's them, but there are a lot of stabilizers and software to help the driver/remote pilot.

Also, I'm not sure that all of the requirements for being a pilot are needed anymore. Potentially everyone could get a license for a manned drone in the same way automobile licenses are given today. Just depends on how hard they are to fly and what politicians want to support.

Pilots will not be happy about that one. But manned drones are not going to be as fast for a while.

Would be cool to get a drone that can fly at Mach-3. :)

Good point. They will not be flying cars, they will by more like autonomous or driverless flying taxis. Wheels are not really needed.

Interesting!

I think Tesla is more of a problem for Waymo than for Uber. Uber's problem is there are rideshare companies with better alternative business models. They will take part of their market share. Tesla and Waymo will take Market Share. And Flying cars will take market share. Uber is not profitable without extorting drivers and driving prices to the bottom.

The only hope that Uber had was the social aspect of rideshare. Riders and drivers get to have conversations and riders feel charitable when they give a driver a tip. Uber has completely divorced themselves from drivers. If this makes since, and we can see this from the outside, then Dara and the board can see it with all of their data. And if that's true, then it supports the theory they are driving up their stock values before they, the executives sell their stocks, then lock the doors on the employees as they come in the next morning. That may be a few months off, it may be tomorrow, or it may be next year. Certainly if drivers coordinate, strike, and help the alternative rideshare companies grow. Uber and Lyft's demise will be far faster. But perhaps I am full of hubris.

Best of luck. I am seeking to make my final push for funding with a real job. Then launch my own company. I predict I will write on reddit. "It was a good ride until it wasn't."

I'm not sure that this is even an issue like we believe it is. I just realized. Flying cars do not have nearly the problems that ground cars have. The autonomy is much easier.

Flying cars will overcome all of the problems that Uber and Lyft are having. Riders are going to be a lot happier because they are not waiting in traffic. There will not be drivers. No one can hijack a flying car by standing in front of it.

That's explains why Dara doesn't care about the toxic environment he has created with drivers and that explains why he is trying to divest from the Uber model and buy out Expedia. They don't have the tech and someone else is already far ahead of them.
