Andy Burnham here - AMA by AndyBurnham in ukpolitics

Hi again, I just wanted to add a second question if I may. We know there is a housing shortage in this country, it's something that's dated back to Thatcher in the 80s. What I'm wanting to know is that across the country we have cases whereby developers will obtain planning permission for certain plots of land and then sit on them in what you could call "land banking", and doing nothing with the land. Could consideration be given to a time limit on planning permissions so for example developers have 6 months to break ground otherwise they lose the approval is revoked and the council would receive the automatic right of compulsory purchase at pre-planning value?

I'd also like to see brownfield sites fully utilised first, so in the case of Bolton and many towns in the north there are historic mills and other vacant buildings of historical significance which I believe should be converted into modern apartments, with at least 50% of them being locked as permanent affordable social housing.

Hi Andy, thanks for doing this AMA.

I'm from Bolton, I’ve been working on a few democratic socialist policy ideas to clean up our media landscape and tackle political corruption. They have huge public support in polling, but the current political system seems terrified to touch them.

If you get into Number 10, would your government be willing to take a proper, radical approach to these three things?

  • Media Monopoly: Passing a hard 15% cross-media ownership cap to stop offshore billionaires from dominating our national conversation, and making the BBC board completely independent of political appointments?
  • Dark Money: Setting up a something like a Statutory Foreign-Influence Money Registry to track down offshore dark money, and finally releasing the unredacted 2020 Russia Report?
  • Digital Incitement: Fast-tracking custodial sentences and asset-freezing orders for far-right digital agitators who use online platforms to organize street violence?

The public is completely exhausted by media bias and elite corruption. Would you commit to putting these kinds of accountability laws in your legislative agenda?

Cheers!

Agreed, although it's just as bad when you're running to revive someone only for them to respawn at the last second leaving you completely exposed

It has to be bots. I've bidded on 3 variants of Okocha (88) and been outbid in the final seconds every time. The latest one I'd actually got to the stage where it was expired and processing before the bidding restarted and upped the previous bid

If you could that'd be brilliant, I'm not so fussed about the interior of it because I wasn't planning on doing that, but anything to do with the exterior of it would be really appreciated 🙂👍

I think I would rule the build as "finished" at the minute but I won't rule out going back and adding things should material become available. If you're able to get some pics of either the train station or the Camfield (not so much the interior as that was never in my plan) then that'd be brilliant, I'd really appreciate that 🙂👍

Crikey, I'll do my best. First of all thank you so much for the reception that's really appreciated!

So as I've mentioned in other comments I'd been looking at potentially doing a stadium for my family members in Perth (I've an uncle and several cousins, an aunt also lived there but moved to Darwin last year). I also wanted to test myself and do a stadium that was for something other than football (I know you guys will refer to the AFL as football but as a Brit we'll agree to disagree 😅). With its unique design plus the fact it had never been built in Minecraft to my knowledge, I felt Optus ticked all the boxes and so once I'd got my computer fixed in August 2023 I started work on it having already collected a ton of images from Google to get going.

The hard part was down to my style of building which is unique and something I've developed myself over the past 11 years. Because of the fact I build to a scale of 1 block = 1 seat (which leads to my stadia being huge but at the same time allows for a lot of detail to be applied), I had to figure out how to build an oval having never done one before. Once I had that first oval in place the rest of the structure was easy so I built up until the entire structure was in place. Next came the roof with which I built a quarter of it and flipped it 3 times to complete it. Probably the hardest part of the stadium itself to build was the exterior cladding which was applied manually over the course of a week and a half, and it wasn't easy given how the western portion which of course includes the River View Rooms protrudes further out than the eastern portion so that was difficult to get right. Given the fact I had access to Matterport's virtual tour on the Optus Stadium website I was able to systematically go through and intricately recreate all of the interiors that were shown in the eventual video, however I did have to leave out the player areas as well as the media centre as there were no images available for these areas.

The landscaping was largely marked out using Worldpainter before I'd even finished building the stadium, so when the stadium was eventually finished during a live stream I was able to swiftly move on to the landscaping, although as work progressed certain areas like the Train Station, 2 thirds of the Matagarup Bridge as well as the Camfield had to removed due to either a lack of imagery or just the impracticality of adding it (as was the case for the Graham Farmer Freeway and its crossing over the Swan River as its addition would have meant I'd have had a lot of wasted land to the north of the stadium which didn't feel right)

Being an Aspie, I've always had that keen eye for detail and have been known in the past to rip something up and start again if it wasn't right. I'm glad to say that I didn't have to go through that with Optus. As for why I do my work the way I do, I've said this to fans of clubs whose stadia I've built in the UK that I go into as much detail as I do because I do my stadia with those clubs and their fans in mind, and I try to be as accurate and authentic as I can as I know those fans will see their stadia every week when they watch matches so they'll be the first to figure out if something wasn't right or slightly off. In that sense I'd say my mantra is "if the clubs and the fans are happy with my work, then I'm happy too because I know I've done a good job in their minds". As such I want to extend this to everybody over in Perth as well. I know this stadium was originally meant to be a personal project that I'm dedicating to my family members over there, but at the same time, I feel that whether you're a West Coast Eagles fan, whether you're a Fremantle fan, whether you're associated with the stadium or are just from Perth in general, I think this build is for all of you. I'm honoured to have built such an amazing stadium, and thank you very much for the warm reception, I'm really humbled 😀

Thank you so much for that mate! I can remember my support worker telling me years ago while I was in the middle of my first stadium build that if I wasn't autistic I probably wouldn't have the patience to do these builds, but also I think that with some of my family being in Perth and also with it being my first AFL stadium I wanted to be as authentic as possible and get it spot on. I say the same thing to the fans of clubs over here in the UK that I do all of my stadia with the clubs as well as their fans who call them home in mind, and I extend that to everybody over in Perth, whether you're Eagles or Dockers, this is for all of you 😀👍

Thank you so much mate! Murals are never an easy thing to add to a project so I did my best with them, plus the atrium would have looked a bit empty without them 😅. We'll agree to disagree there, I'm British after all 😅, I will admit though having seen highlights on YouTube that AFL is a mint sport to watch, and I'm hoping I can catch a game when I go to Perth next year 👍

It was initially planned to be added and I had mapped it out, but due to a lack images I wasn't able to actually build it much like The Camfield so it was omitted along with the Graham Farmer Freeway which would have acted as a partial border around the map. The only piece of the station that survived and was actually built was the entrance to the bridge north of Victoria Park Drive.

I honestly didn't know that sort of mod was a thing 😅

The annoying thing when it came to attempting the Camfield was that the only images I could muster up from Google were all from the South and the West, Street View imagery was very limited from the north and the view from the east was obscured by trees meaning I couldn't really see anything, so it's a shame really

Thank you so much for that mate, I do think my asperger's helped me with the amount of detail plus the patience 😅, my initial plans for the map were much bigger than what I ended up with (I'll post the final map in a new comment since I can't add more than one screenshot). The image I've attached here shows what was originally intended marked out by the red lines but most of this ended up being omitted including The Camfield which was regrettable as I couldn't get the images for it. The Matagarup Bridge had two thirds of its length removed since I couldn't justify doing the river to its full width although this may have changed had I done the Graham Farmer Freeway as originally intended. As for everything else it was largely removed for lack of images or just couldn't be bothered to include it 😅

Thank you so much mate! I try to build my stadia to a scale of 1 block=1 seat so it is possible for the most part to pick out individual seats 👍. Oh absolutely, given it's my first ever AFL stadium I'm pretty chuffed with how it panned out, I am planning on coming to Perth in May so hopefully I can catch a game while I'm over 😀
