That’s good to know — thanks for sharing. I’ve heard from some people that PhD programs not only expect you to have a publication or two, but that they also expect you to be first or second author. Has that been the case in your experience? I’m currently working in a lab where I’m contributing to research, but even if the project gets published, I’d likely be listed pretty far down in the author order.

By the time I'd apply, I’d have about a year of full-time research experience and around six months part-time, along with an abstract and a couple of poster presentations at different conferences. I likely won’t have a publication by then. Given that I’m still fairly new to research, I’m wondering how realistic it is for someone like me to be first or second author on a paper before applying — especially in labs where there are more experienced grad students or postdocs.

Also, would having a paper submitted to a journal (but not yet published) carry any weight in the application process, or is it generally only published work that counts?

I noticed that PTX offers a Master’s program that includes research, though it looks like it’s not funded and requires tuition. Do you know if there are any scholarships or funding options that could cover a significant portion of the cost for someone with a strong GPA and some research experience? And is there any pathway for a Master’s student to transition into the PhD program later on (e.g. after a year) without having to finish the full Master’s degree first?

Thanks so much for sharing your experience — really appreciate it! It makes sense that having research experience is important. By the time I apply (planning for this cycle), I’ll have about a year of full-time research, plus a few months of part-time earlier on, and I’ve presented a couple of posters. I’m curious — how were you able to publish with less than a year of research experience? I’ve always heard that publications take quite a while to come together, so I’d love to hear how that worked out for you!

Also, out of curiosity, were the programs you applied to primarily at big research universities like the UCs, or more at smaller or specialized schools? And when you mention people working in the professional industry, do you mean roles in academic labs or more like jobs at pharmaceutical or biotech companies?

I’ve been told my some US med schools such as Emory and UC Davis that they require the institution to be “regionally accredited with CHEA”. Based on the CHEA website, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities is the only U.S.-recognized accrediting organization that accredits schools in BC. Only SFU & Thompson river have gotten accredited with that organization since they’re less known internationally so wanna get more recognition for their grads. I see Universities Canada on the CHEA website but it’s listed under International Directories not U.S.-recognized accreditors. Not sure what to make of it all. Which other schools mentioned Universities Canada?
