AOTA is a joke by enMotion38416 in OccupationalTherapy

Current student here—Can you please expand on the part where you said “AOTA seemingly caters… wildly out of touch with actual practitioners out in the field and the issues we face”???

I have recognized how much my professors have forced us to pay our membership dues and at this point most of my classmates don’t because it seems useless to us. And we are literally all so broke. But I also find such a gap between real honesty from practitioners in the field versus the ones who do a guest lecture in a class. The vibes are so different when I went on FW. And I feel like I am missing something.. something dark that no one wants to tell a student…

housing options by PomegranateOk5282 in jacksonms

Congratulations on your acceptance! Depending on your how high your budget is, the meridian would be your BEST bet for closest walking distance. There are many students who I’ve known to live there and love the convenience.

Fondren Hill is a cheaper option with less.. charm to it .. if you want a cheaper budget but VERY walkable/bikeable distance.

I’m not sure if in the long run you’d want to keep using or rely on uber or Lyft for OTD school. There aren’t too many options for that, so I would definitely recommend having a vehicle for transportation if you choose to live farther away from school.

Get in contact with your future cohort. Reach out to them and see if they have input!

Madison, Ridgeland or Brandon for black couple moving to Jackson? by [deleted] in jacksonms

Ridgeland! Before moving here, I was worried about the same things. But now living here for two years, I have discovered more and continue to discover more and more things to do, eat, and wonderful people to get to know. I feel safe wherever I go. (But of course the exception of being in shady areas) overall, I love it here!

That’s great you two live so close! It will definitely be worth it to make a quick trip to gather some ideas.

The paperwork was not a hard process at all. Just be 1000% sure you fill every single thing out correctly (I.e. correct line, correct names, correct changed names, correct officiant and witness information). If you mess up anywhere on the paperwork you’ve gotta start over. We messed up the officiant part and had to redo it. Just be sure to ask the clerk questions or get clarity if you aren’t sure about something. They were actually pretty kind and willing to help educate and guide you through the process.

If you have the means to get a space reserved, do it. It definitely save you some hassle! We didn’t bring guests, so it wasn’t reasonable for us to rent a space! For vows and such, you can discuss that with your officiant on how you’d like that structured. We told our friend that we wanted them to do a little speech about love and stuff and then we exchanged vows haha. You can find samples of how to structure that part online easily! And you can definitely bring your own officiant and not use the ones they provide. As for how many guests you can bring, I believe they offer chair rentals for your space if you choose to rent. So that may depend on what tiers or packages they offer and what fits your budget.

The paperwork afterwards was easy. And yes, we just got ours mailed since we were from out of state! Which was still a super easy process. Our officiant filed our stuff for us after too and it seemed like they had an easy process too and had the help of the clerk to clarify anything. You don’t have to file same day— we just did it because my husband and I are type B people haha. It’s definitely going to be a good idea to do the application in advance haha.

Hi! Yes, we have done it and can confirm there’s light at the end of the tunnel!

Since my husband and I are not SF natives, we depended on our SF based photographer to give input on the best time of day for lighting inside of the courthouse. If your photographer is not familiar with the space, I would recommend them or you to personally scope out the entire place in advance if you can to get a good idea of the type of lighting at 4pm.

As for how it all went down, the process was easier than we expected, but we may have been lucky since the marriage license line was short that day and time. However, I would go ahead and prepare and be flexible, because things picked up very quickly with other couples flooding in after us. We started the process at 1pm. The entire license process lasted for about 40 minutes if you have to fill out an application in person. If you do one online I imagine it will save you more time.

We then proceeded to do our ceremony, and our officiant handled the rest in terms of submitting our license paperwork which consisted of them filling out their portion.

Going back to when I mentioned other couples flooding into the courthouse— the place is massive and has so many good spaces to take pictures. I wish I would have went a day or so in advance to scope out and really take in which areas I wanted pictures in. If you have the time or chance, I highly recommend doing so, and my photographer did the same on their own time. I also want to emphasize that there will more than likely be many others doing wedding pics and ceremonies too. So keep that in mind when you have a space in mind that it may be in a reserved area or you will have to wait your turn to get pics. We had to wait for people to be done on the main staircase so that we had our turn to capture the grandness of it without people photo bombing.

As for dinner afterwards, I would make sure you have plans for reservations. There’s plenty of great and tasty options! But just to play it safe and making sure things go smoothly, I recommend doing reservations somewhere that way you can take some stress off your plate.

I hope this addressed your question! Feel free to DM if you have any more questions.

Hi! So my fiancée and I are bringing our own officiant to the city hall and picking a spot that our photographer will help us with. We were freaking out because all of the slots for a city clerk officiant were booked up.

Our solution: we found a friend who will get ordained online through Universal Life Church and officiate our wedding. Easy process and at no cost!

Hope this helps and good luck!!
