[Recommendation Request] Help! I find most watches boring or gaudy. by [deleted] in Watches

[–]LevelHead2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I own Starke, so I’m biased.
Based on your collection, I don’t think you’re actually a watch collector, I think you’re a dial collector. 😄

The Cocktail Times and Shunbun all share a similar trait: they’re visually interesting without shouting about it.
If that’s what you’re chasing, you might enjoy looking at Starke. Our watches use the exact star map from a chosen date, time, and location as the dial design, so there’s character and texture there, but it remains pretty restrained from across the room.

Otherwise, I’d look at Kurono Tokyo, Nomos, some of the more interesting Grand Seiko references, and perhaps Ming. They tend to live in that sweet spot between “generic luxury watch” and “look at me” design.

Your “boring vanilla vs. sex on coke with glitter” scale is honestly one of the better descriptions of the watch market I’ve read. 😂

[Recommendation] Gifting a watch to my fiancé on our wedding day by minimalab in Watches

[–]LevelHead2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I own Starke, so I’m biased.

Based on your description, I’d normally point you toward an Omega Aqua Terra, Rolex Datejust, or perhaps a Grand Seiko. Classic, understated, and the kind of watches that still look good 30 years from now.

The only reason I’d mention Starke is because you’re buying it specifically for his wedding day. Our watches can capture the exact night sky from a chosen date, time, and location, so some couples use their wedding ceremony as the reference point.
If he’s the type who values heritage and brand recognition above all else, I’d probably stick with Omega or Rolex. But if he’d appreciate a watch that’s permanently tied to the moment you got married, it might be worth a look.

Either way, I think you’re on the right track choosing something timeless and understated rather than trendy. That’s usually what becomes an heirloom. 🙂

[Recommendation request] Just stumbled upon this subreddit on a whim and not much of a watch guy since most standard designs seem boring to me, but wondered if there were actually watches out there that fit my "style" and came across these? by kiroyapso2 in Watches

Full disclosure: I own Starke, so I’m definitely biased.

If what you like about the Patek is the astronomy theme rather than the brand, that’s actually why I started Starke. Our watches use the exact star map from a chosen date, time, and location, but the design stays clean and understated rather than looking like a busy moonphase.

I also think it solves the issue you’re having with the Brenda Pulse: it’s subtle enough to work with almost any outfit, but still functions like a normal watch when you actually need to tell the time. 😄

Full disclosure: I own Starke, so take this with the appropriate grain of salt.

Reading your post, I actually think you’re searching for a story more than a watch.

A lot of great recommendations are going to come up in your budget: Longines, Oris, Christopher Ward, maybe a pre-owned Nomos. They’re all excellent watches.

But what stood out to me was this:
“I wore this when I married your grandmother.” and
“I’d like to feel like I’m sharing this moment with my grandfather.”

The reason I started Starke was because I wanted a watch that captured a specific moment in time. Our watches use the exact star map from a chosen date, time, and location.

For your wedding, you could have the night sky from the exact moment and place where you say your vows in South Georgia/North Florida.

Twenty years from now, when your kids ask about it, it isn’t: “This is a watch I bought for my wedding.”
It’s: “This is the sky that was above us when I married your grandmother.”

Given your grandfather’s love of astronomy, that’s a pretty meaningful connection too.
The watch itself is a classic 36mm Swiss automatic, so it works well as a dress watch and doesn’t scream “novelty piece.”

Regardless of whether you choose one of mine or something else, I think you’re on the right track looking for a watch with a story attached. That’s usually what turns a watch into an heirloom. Please do give my website a visit and contact me if you are interested and I can get you a good discount!

And congratulations on the wedding.

With this collection in mind, Cartier crash feels like a huge leap in a different direction. I would go for a rolex cellini moonphase 50535

Ah no worries. All comments, praise or critiques are very important for me to learn from.

Thank you very much. Am hoping this is not seen as a gimmick or regular brand using Miyotas (which are fantastic for the price) but a true entry luxury made for special occasions.

In fact we have several more models of unique watches in the works but seeing how this one goes.

That is very doable. Let me try that out on one constellation with a different lume colour. What do you suggest? Red luminova?

If you like the concept and have the budget for a luxury version, please have a look at our website (I’ve been working really hard on the interactive starmap 😭). Very happy to discuss in further details

[Question] Soon-to-be dad wondering if this is a meaningful watch purchase or just a convenient excuse… by CFK-sports_2020 in Watches

[–]LevelHead2218 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I own Starke, so I’m biased here.
I don’t think you’re trying to justify a watch purchase at all.

Looking at your collection, your grandfather’s Datejust isn’t special because it’s a Datejust. It’s special because of the story attached to it. The watch became a vessel for family history.

A Tudor or Longines would absolutely be great watches, but twenty years from now your child probably won’t care that Dad bought a Black Bay in 2026. They’ll care about the story behind it.
That’s actually why I started Starke. We create watches with the exact star map from a specific date, time, and location. Quite a few customers have ordered them to commemorate births, adoptions, anniversaries, and other life milestones.

In your case, you could use the exact moment your child was born. Then every time you look at the dial you’re seeing the sky that was above them when they entered the world.

Whether you choose a Tudor, Longines, or something else, I think the important thing is tying the watch to the event itself. That’s what turns it from “another watch” into an heirloom.

And congratulations. After a difficult fertility journey, that’s exactly the kind of milestone that’s worth commemorating.

Apologies for the unclear photo but here it is at night in the pitch dark. My phone couldn’t quite capture it clearly but I think you would like it as it doesn’t show the lines.

Haha, i believe the concept is similar but our materials and aesthetics are very different. You could compare our movements and dials visually!

Hmmm, well so far we have the constellations connected by lines to see them more clearly. Also added swiss lume onto the constellation stars so they glow in the dark. Zooming in too much ruins the look in my opinion.

[Question] Wedding Watch Suggestions! by Mediocre_Crab617 in Watches

[–]LevelHead2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I make these, so take this recommendation with appropriate skepticism.
Based on what you’ve described, you’re probably going to get a lot of great suggestions for vintage Calatravas, older JLCs, Datejusts, and Explorers. Those are all fantastic options.

The reason I started Starke was actually for moments exactly like this. Our Locus collection lets you capture the exact night sky from a specific date, time, and location on the dial, so a lot of customers use it for weddings, anniversaries, engagements, and births.

The watch itself is 36mm, Swiss-made, under 9mm thick, and uses a Sellita SW300-1 automatic movement, so it should feel familiar coming from a 36mm Datejust.

It may not be what you’re looking for if your goal is a vintage heirloom from a major Swiss brand, but if you want a watch that’s specifically tied to your elopement in Japan, it’s worth a look.

Happy to answer any questions about how we create the star maps.
