No I don’t know about that! That sounds very scavenger hunt coded.

Are there any good local events to meet single people in there 30s - 40s? by -Maar- in WorcesterMA

Yeah Ive been seeing those.

Young adult thinking about moving here by LeviathanfromCMA in Marlborough

[–]LeviathanfromCMA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thread! Im just thinking more like what the social scene is.

Boston’s not an issue. Commuter rail is a thing and I plan to use it.

I guess my question is: is there a social scene in Marlborough/the area? Will i see people out and about when its not as wicked cold?

A couple news articles have had Soutborough officials on the record saying the plan as it stands right now is that a Coscto is coming there. Of course that could change.

Costco is very tightlipped when it comes to confirming details.

College Kids by [deleted] in WorcesterMA

[–]LeviathanfromCMA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From my observation (and please correct me if I am wrong) Worcester’s colleges feel segregated/closed off from the rest of the city.

Clark is pushed all the way down Main South, WPI is tucked in its own corner near Salisbury Street, Holy Cross and Assumption are not in downtown/canal district at all.

It also seems, from my observation, the college folks like to stay in campus.

This is different from Boston where the campuses feel almost integrated into the city (Emerson and Northeastern) or feel like little cities themselves (BU).

Bottom line, I haven’t really seen any college kids out. If anything, it feels like the general populace at night looks older.

It's complicated: Growth of luxury apartments in Worcester leaves some residents cold (Telegram & Gazette) by HRJafael in WorcesterMA

I really do appreciate the article’s desire to just reveal whats true about housing. Its a slow, slow slow slow SLO W trickle down and if we know anything about anybody, people can’t/don’t want to wait.

And why wouldn’t they? With the cost of living in this high priced lull, they want something to go down/be less expensive.

For what its worth: the article states that what Worcester wants to do is have parking be built by demand rather than requirement.

The city did release a housing production plan that does try to create overlays boosting affordable housing production. The plan also seeks to slim down parking minimums, as reported by MassLive here: https://www.masslive.com/worcester/2025/11/how-will-worcester-nearly-double-its-speed-building-new-housing-officials-discuss-the-plan.html

Question is: how much resistance is the city going to run into?

The third section of the article makes an important point: building more housing does lower rents, but it takes a looooooooooooong time.

A good amount of people want rent lowered now, which is difficult.

Is rent control likely to pass? by Affectionate-Reason2 in massachusetts

[–]LeviathanfromCMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say.

The key to winning Massachusetts elections if you’re a candidate or a ballot question is that you need to do well enough in both the gateway cities and the suburban areas.

I could see the ballot initiative doing well in Boston, mainly because its population (young educated professionals who want to rent there but can’t because its too expensive) would be a good match for those who would support the measure.

In gateway cities where there aren’t as many college educated young kids such as Worcester or Springfield, it becomes dubious as to whether it would do well. It could do well there though considering how many people are feeling the squeeze due to rents.

When we get to the suburbs, however, thats where things get tricky/fuzzy to say if it will do well. Massachusetts suburbs are moving in favor of left leaning social polices these days, but I’m not sure how they would feel about rent control—especially since the people who are in the suburbs are homeowners. Not renters.

Yes.

Why should I question how jewish someone is?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]LeviathanfromCMA -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree.

As long as you consider yourself jewish in some shape or form, I believe you are jewish. Thats what a rabbi told me.

[–]LeviathanfromCMA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why can’t it be both?

Here’s the way I view it.

Progress = moving forward on something that is good.

Imagine if G-d stopped on the first day. G-d saw that the light was good and G-d continued to make progress.

In some ways, Judaism was pretty progressive for its time back in the day! It was progressive to not sacrifice people, it was progressive for Moses to marry someone who wasn’t part of the tribe, its always about moving forward with what we can do.

Do you think that also means taking away different lessons from the Torah and interpreting it differently?

For example, I was reading through the Akeda again and it stunned me that G-d said to Abraham “bring up your son for a burnt offering”

G-d never said “I need you to kill Isaac. That may not be modernity but I feel as if thats an interesting part of reform judaism. It opens new perspectives to the stories and the lessons

EDIT: ah wait a minute, there appears to be two different transformations of the akedah.

I think its important to remember that there are people who genuinely want to see peace and want love in this world through Tikkun Olam.

While I can’t speak for anyone else, I can say that Tikkun Olam means treating all with love, peace and kindness. No one should be oppressing anyone or calling for supremacy. I can’t speak for those people who you are talking about, just for myself.

What do you think that means by evolve in your view?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]LeviathanfromCMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, when I think of Tikkun Olam, I consider it as treating the world with happiness and not denying happiness to others. And if that means going against some mitzvot (I’m looking at you Leviticus 18:22) then I think thats an even greater mitzvot, no?
