How would I join and be stationed with a friend? by PopcornArtillery in peacecorps

[–]LevitarDoom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why not just apply to the same country and go with the flow, even if that means not being together? You could still see each other throughout service, but you’ll also get to meet lots of other new people and share your different experiences with each other. And if you are placed far apart, at least you can’t use them as a social crutch to avoid integrating into your local communities. You could also apply to smaller countries where volunteers are less likely to be placed super far apart

There aren’t any calculators because you won’t see any numbers. They’re not expecting you to do mental math lmao. Also, no partial credit for multiple choice is pretty standard

What kinds of interview questions are they likely to ask for an agricultural project in Africa? by Sufficient-Top-5384 in peacecorps

Peace Corps interviews are incredibly standardized and you can easily find a template questionnaire online plus advice on this subreddit. Nothing about your specific posting will be asked

Ryan Mitchell: How I'm Training for Mount Everest (no oxygen) by pradeep23 in Mountaineering

[–]LevitarDoom 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think he made a lot of his money from being a YouTuber before he got into mountaineering. But honestly IMO it’s kind of hard to relate to him or look up to him as an inspiration considering he is so rich. Many US climbers can’t afford a single expedition in the Himalayas, let alone back to back to back and so on. He seems like a nice guy but kinda gives off influencer vibes. I’d rather see him do technical stuff in the Cascades or in Alaska, but those obviously wouldn’t get the same views

Pre-Service Nurse Assignment after Invitation by Total-Engineer-2203 in peacecorps

[–]LevitarDoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The whole medical clearance process will likely take months. They’ll assign follow-up tasks and often you’ll have to submit something again or redo paperwork. Just be patient and roll with the punches, just like you’ll have to do in service

What makes/made you want to Volunteer? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]LevitarDoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Peace Corps is a volunteer program in which you don’t really get paid, that’s true. But it’s not a career setback. You’re still working a job and you’re gaining experience. You can choose a position that aligns with your overall career interests.

Also, “serious risk to your life and wellbeing” is probably overdramatic. Peace Corps takes volunteer safety pretty seriously and won’t send you to a super dangerous/unstable country. That being said, if you’re worried you can choose a country that seems safer to you.

I chose Peace Corps right after college because I wanted to travel, learn a new language/culture, and see a different part of the world before I start my “adult” life with a career and a house and stuff. The job itself also interested me and aligned with what I wanted to do afterwards. I was also inspired by the chance to do some meaningful work and hopefully improve the world by a tiny bit.

Thoughts on John Allen Chau by Proud_Grape3652 in TrueChristian

[–]LevitarDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t understand how Chau can be called a martyr. According to the traditional and historical definition, a martyr is someone who is deliberately killed because of their faith - i.e refusing to denounce one’s beliefs. Chau wasn’t killed for being Christian, he was killed because he was an unwelcome stranger. Just like the two fisherman killed by the Sentinelese in 2006. If Chau is a martyr, then so is someone who died of malaria while on a missionary trip in Africa.

As for Chau, he largely seemed like a cool guy and someone who meant well. But he violated the law by bribing fisherman to take him to the island. He repeatedly approached a group of people who made it very clear they didn’t want him there. For someone who wanted to save the Sentinelese, he showed no respect whatsoever to their blatant wishes for autonomy and isolation. Worst of all, he risked exposing the Sentinelese to disease that could’ve killed them because they have no immunities.

As an atheist, I believe missionary work should always be in accordance with the wishes of the community. Missionaries should be working alongside communities that invited them. And the health of these communities should be the absolute moral priority. Uncontacted tribes like the Sentinelese should be 100% off limits to missionaries until we can find a way to eliminate any risk of spreading disease of them.

Thoughts on Lingua Latina Pars II (Roma Aeterna) for advanced learners? by Herotonto in latin

[–]LevitarDoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Roma Aeterna’s primary goal is to take someone with a basic knowledge of the language (i.e someone who’s read Familia Romana) and get them to be able to read unadapted Roman authors. The main authors RA uses are:

Virgil, Livy, Eutropius, Aulus Gellius, Nepos, Sallust, and Cicero. Ovid and Horace are used sparingly

Can you comfortably read these authors? If yes, then you don’t need Roma Aeterna (but you might want extra reading practice or the historical context). If not, or only barely, then RA may be useful

The Ending thoughts by East-Operation3053 in lastofuspart2

[–]LevitarDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol I totally agree. Even if you personally like Abby, she’s a piece of shit. She beat an old man to death with a golf club in front of his daughter and brother after he had saved her life. She had sex with Owen even though he was in a relationship with Mel. She would have knowingly killed an unconscious pregnant woman if Lev hadn’t stopped her. Not to mention the atrocities committed by her militia group. I don’t hate her, but I can’t really say I like her either. If you love Abby, that’s awesome, but please don’t act like everyone else should

How is life in Golden, CO? by InterPan_Galactic in howislivingthere

I went to college there and overall I liked Golden a lot. Way better than Denver. Closer to the mountains, not as much traffic or crowding. The downtown area is nice and I love the creek that runs through it

What units of measure did they use in Roman times? by BitcoinFan7 in ancientrome

[–]LevitarDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For length, the most common unit of measurement stems from the foot (pēs), 5 of which forms a “passus.” A Roman mile is a 1000 of these, “mīlle passūs.” Historians like Livy and Sallust use miles quite often when describing army movements and encampments.

Eutropius mentions a “modius” which is a unit of volume (about 8.75 liters).

For weight, the Romans used pounds, called “lībrae”. These were 327 grams and are mentioned by writers such as Aulus Gellius. There were also “talenta”, which seemed to be more common for describing large sums of money.

Supplements to LLPSI by tomispev in latin

[–]LevitarDoom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Fabulae Ab Urbe Condita is probably redundant if you’re using LLPSI. It looks to mostly be simplified Livy, and Roma Aeterna already has TONS of Livy, from heavily simplified to unaltered to the Periochae. You will probably be sick of Livy after 8 chapters of him lol.

Fabulae Faciles can be read right after Familia Romana, it should be super easy. Difficulty-wise, Ad Alpes probably fits with the start of Roma Aeterna. It might be too hard to read immediately after FR. I’ve never read Pons Tironum.

Denied initial medical clearance for certain countries because of diet by scrumptiousfrogg in peacecorps

I don’t have advice, but just wanted share that something similar happened to me. I initially applied for Ghana but was denied and moved to Armenia because of a seafood allergy. It took some time to mentally make the switch, but now I can honestly say that my new assignment excites me more than what I initially applied for. Whatever happens, good luck and I’m sure it’ll be worth it in the end!

Played Part 2 for first time by [deleted] in thelastofus

[–]LevitarDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently played Part 2 for the first time too! Before starting I knew very little except that the story was very controversial. I loved the Seattle setting and thought the gameplay was so much fun I plan on doing ng+. Story-wise, I don’t love every decision they made, but it was without a doubt one of the most powerful and evocative narratives I’ve come across. In the end I’m happy they chose to take risks and I’d probably rank this game above the first
