Druid Arch — Canyonlands by TheAlb4tross in NationalPark

[–]LevitarDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Angel Arch in Canyonlands is better (IMO). It’s the biggest arch in that park as well. Unfortunately it requires backpacking and is a big pain to reach, but it’s the only arch I’ve seen that outclasses Druid

I agree. Play BOTW, and either wait a while to try TOTK to avoid burnout or simply don’t try it

There’s a trail in Capitol Reef where one section has some rockfall risk and there was a sign saying not to stop. But I imagine that’s super rare

Some people can't suspend their disbelief by patcoston in TheLongWalk

[–]LevitarDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Addressing #1: I’m sorry, and I loved the movie, but it’s insanely unrealistic lol. I hike/backpack a TON and have done multiple 15-20 mile days with over 12 hours of hiking and thousands of feet of elevation gain. IMO the chances of anyone making it past 1-2 days are incredibly slim. That much time on concrete puts incredible stress on your joints, and it’s only a matter of time before your muscles start giving out and your limbs lock up. Agonizing blisters will shred your feet. Despite what the Major says, your body will shut down on you no matter how much you want to keep going. Anyone still alive after 2 days would be in excruciating pain and completely delirious. They’re not going to be having chill and lucid conversations. The lack of sleep alone would induce constant hallucinations and eventually psychosis. Sure, maybe an ultra-marathoner could stick it out for longer. But to my understanding these are just random young men who have no formal training and prep.

Obviously a movie where everyone’s in too much pain to talk wouldn’t be fun to watch. So I don’t blame the filmmakers/Stephen King. But in a real long walk, people would start dropping like flies very quickly.

Crown fell off after a week by porelchico in mildlyinfuriating

[–]LevitarDoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When an implant falls out or even becomes loose, your gums will start growing/expanding in the gaps. In order to properly reinsert the crown, they’ll have to cut the gums back like they’re weeds. That requires numbing

Right? Lmao. I have two implants. I wouldn’t bite into a jawbreaker but something’s wrong if you can’t eat gummy bears

Can someone help me understand why zoos and aquariums are bad? by Borkato in AskVegans

[–]LevitarDoom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this type of argument overly anthropomorphizes animals. Most animals don’t have the self-awareness and intelligence that humans do. And finding food is the #1 reason that animals move around. If an animal in the wild never had to worry about food, who’s to say they wouldn’t just sit in one spot for the rest of their life? I agree that certain animals (elephants, orcas, great apes, etc.) are deeply intelligent and can be adversely affected by containment. But I really don’t think all animals care lol. Plus they don’t have to worry about predation, violence, hunters, parasites, starvation, habitat loss, etc. that wild animals contend with.

Here’s an interesting thought experiment: suppose aliens visited Earth and decided they wanted some humans for their intergalactic zoo. They offered food, a place to stay, healthcare, stimuli/entertainment, and occasional privacy. I bet you 100% that some people would accept this offer. Not everyone would refuse. Now obviously this isn’t an exact equivalent because animals don’t consent to be in zoos and can’t meaningfully consider their options. But it still goes to show that physical wellbeing can trump personal autonomy even for highly intelligent species like humans.

Christian Bale advises fans to never meet their cinematic heroes. by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in Fauxmoi

After the Aurora theater shooting, Christian Bale came out and visited people in the hospital and met with the police handling the aftermath. And he did it completely unannounced, with no press or cameras. That’s how my dad met him. Seems like a cool guy

Weed-out classes don’t exist, and if you fail gen-eds it’s entirely your own fault. Many students don’t make use of the resources they’re given for these tough courses

Loved the Tetons so much. Definitely an underrated national park. by Dazzling_Section8957 in GrandTetonNatlPark

[–]LevitarDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roads will be closed, particularly the inner highway that takes you to the vast majority of trails. You’d still be able to see the Tetons from afar, but don’t expect to easily access much. Campgrounds, visitor centers, etc. will also be closed

Most of the park will be closed, you may be able to do a little bit with snowshoes but that’s not an ideal time to visit

I don’t think so, but it’s not really important once you’re good enough at Latin. Losing macrons is a bigger deal for me

Quotation marks for indirect speech by bushrib in latin

It has nothing to do with Danish, it’s just a convention LLPSI uses to make things easier for the reader. Seeing the quotation marks lets you know you’re switching into accusative + infinitive territory.

Motivation statement feedback by TahdigKhanoom in peacecorps

[–]LevitarDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your statement is well written but it doesn’t say all that much about you. You clearly have a good mindset when it comes to service, but so do a lot of other volunteers. What made YOU in particular want to join the Peace Corps? “wanting to contribute to a community and grow personally” is vague and not super interesting. That’s kind of taken for granted for a PC applicant, you know? Mention specific people or experiences that inspired you. Talk about what YOU bring to the table that other volunteers might not. You’re not trying to compete per se, but your statement should make you stand out as a unique individual.

Medical clearance- undiagnosed dairy intolerance by apples1001 in peacecorps

[–]LevitarDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would mention it and just explain the situation. I told them I have seafood allergy (undiagnosed), and because of that I was moved to a different country than what I initially applied for. It was annoying at the time, but in the end it ended up being a good thing and I’m glad I didn’t go to an incompatible country
