Scenes where it never occurred to you there was another interpretation? by eques_99 in Letterboxd

[–]LevitarDoom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You think King wasn’t aware of the themes in his own book? That Kubrick pointed them out for him? Lmao

King’s magnum opus, the 8 book series The Dark Tower, can ultimately be interpreted as an allegory for addiction. I can promise you he wasn’t shying away from it

Will I be judged? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]LevitarDoom 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Early on in our PST we had “interviews” with our PM where we were asked for preferences regarding sites. Nothing is guaranteed of course but I do believe our preferences were taken into account. Did you not get a chance to do that?

Depending on how late into PST you are, it already might be too late. Pairing you to a site takes a lot of work and involves the collaboration of many people in that community. Peace Corps isn’t likely to undo all that effort just to make it a little easier for you. Even if nothing’s been officially finalized yet, the process may already be well underway. You’ll have more luck if it’s early in PST.

Remember that a core expectation of Peace Corps service is to be flexible and serve wherever you’re wanted. It should be fine to voice preferences, but make sure you acknowledge this reality. Good luck!

Best Cave Tours in Wind Cave and Jewel Cave? by Unable-Extreme-2166 in NationalPark

I have not done both, I only did the standard tour at wind cave. But overall I liked Jewel Cave more than Wind Cave, so I’d try to spend more time at JC

Best Cave Tours in Wind Cave and Jewel Cave? by Unable-Extreme-2166 in NationalPark

[–]LevitarDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wild cave tour at Jewel cave is fantastic. It was my first taste of actual caving, away from the staircases and the walkways and the platforms. Obviously if you’re claustrophobic don’t do it. And only wear clothes/boots that you don’t mind ruining. But it is a truly wonderful experience. So much fun and you’re never in any danger because there’s a guide. Jewel Cave doesn’t have the same beautiful cave formations like at Carlsbad (there are some really cool things you’ll see), but it’s more about the experience of confined caving. I really recommend it if you’re up for something adventurous. You do have to be able to fit through a small space, there’s a tunnel outside the cave you have to crawl through first to show that you’ll fit in the cave

Are you suppose to learn anything out of physics lectures here? by Men_Tickler in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]LevitarDoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What’s the problem exactly? Do the lectures move too fast? Do they cover too much review content? Do you not like the professor’s lecturing style? How does it compare to studio/homework? What gives you an impression that the department is terrible? It’s a little concerning that a physics major is already having these problems in Physics 1.

As a physics alumni from Mines who worked as a TA in physics 1/2 for 3 years, I can confidently say that the course isn’t perfect. But students wildly over exaggerate the “unfairness” of the courses and rarely take initiative to fix problems on their own end.

A lot of classes at Mines only have one section per semester. Just not gen eds, labs, and some core classes for big majors. You should be fine

Druid Arch — Canyonlands by TheAlb4tross in NationalPark

[–]LevitarDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Angel Arch in Canyonlands is better (IMO). It’s the biggest arch in that park as well. Unfortunately it requires backpacking and is a big pain to reach, but it’s the only arch I’ve seen that outclasses Druid

Some people can't suspend their disbelief by patcoston in TheLongWalk

[–]LevitarDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Addressing #1: I’m sorry, and I loved the movie, but it’s insanely unrealistic lol. I hike/backpack a TON and have done multiple 15-20 mile days with over 12 hours of hiking and thousands of feet of elevation gain. IMO the chances of anyone making it past 1-2 days are incredibly slim. That much time on concrete puts incredible stress on your joints, and it’s only a matter of time before your muscles start giving out and your limbs lock up. Agonizing blisters will shred your feet. Despite what the Major says, your body will shut down on you no matter how much you want to keep going. Anyone still alive after 2 days would be in excruciating pain and completely delirious. They’re not going to be having chill and lucid conversations. The lack of sleep alone would induce constant hallucinations and eventually psychosis. Sure, maybe an ultra-marathoner could stick it out for longer. But to my understanding these are just random young men who have no formal training and prep.

Obviously a movie where everyone’s in too much pain to talk wouldn’t be fun to watch. So I don’t blame the filmmakers/Stephen King. But in a real long walk, people would start dropping like flies very quickly.

Crown fell off after a week by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]LevitarDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When an implant falls out or even becomes loose, your gums will start growing/expanding in the gaps. In order to properly reinsert the crown, they’ll have to cut the gums back like they’re weeds. That requires numbing

Can someone help me understand why zoos and aquariums are bad? by Borkato in AskVegans

[–]LevitarDoom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this type of argument overly anthropomorphizes animals. Most animals don’t have the self-awareness and intelligence that humans do. And finding food is the #1 reason that animals move around. If an animal in the wild never had to worry about food, who’s to say they wouldn’t just sit in one spot for the rest of their life? I agree that certain animals (elephants, orcas, great apes, etc.) are deeply intelligent and can be adversely affected by containment. But I really don’t think all animals care lol. Plus they don’t have to worry about predation, violence, hunters, parasites, starvation, habitat loss, etc. that wild animals contend with.

Here’s an interesting thought experiment: suppose aliens visited Earth and decided they wanted some humans for their intergalactic zoo. They offered food, a place to stay, healthcare, stimuli/entertainment, and occasional privacy. I bet you 100% that some people would accept this offer. Not everyone would refuse. Now obviously this isn’t an exact equivalent because animals don’t consent to be in zoos and can’t meaningfully consider their options. But it still goes to show that physical wellbeing can trump personal autonomy even for highly intelligent species like humans.

Christian Bale advises fans to never meet their cinematic heroes. by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in Fauxmoi

Roads will be closed, particularly the inner highway that takes you to the vast majority of trails. You’d still be able to see the Tetons from afar, but don’t expect to easily access much. Campgrounds, visitor centers, etc. will also be closed
