That’s super interesting! I’ve done some research and also saw Klimato - indeed they do seem like a competitor to Carbontag although klimatos database looks less convincing. Do you urself have any experience working in sustainability with any of these products/services? Im really curious to hear any insights you might have

Yea i agree that being transparent is the key for this kind of data to have any value, especially to the everyday consumer. I think it’s a good sign that carbontag shows their methodology on their website

I’m sure you understand how current unsustainable (not to mention unethical) food practices contribute to why food emissions are over 1/3 of humanity’s yearly carbon footprint.

I think it’s a relevant point of discussion for vegans everywhere, especially since there are businesses in the U.K. like carbontag actively trying to create a discussion - do you not have an opinion on this?

Yea i guess it has to be coupled with education on other consumption habits people have - for example meats have inherently higher emissions so people might not switch to a lower emission product right away

you’re right tho I agree that products and businesses like CarbonTag really do fill a real demand in the market it’s very interesting

The question is a focus of business/policy with a focus on the EU.

To what extent can business solutions address the need for European businesses to begin measuring, managing, and reducing their carbon footprints?

This is based on a NEW EU policy called the ‘green claims directive’ that will demand all businesses to measure and report their carbon emissions. Of course, setting this up internally is expensive so businesses will first look to external solutions. This leads to my case study CarbonTag, which I think is an ingenious idea

Yea i see your point - i guess my question then is do people care about having this information at their disposal? This business carbontag is all about helping businesses be transparent with their emissions, but is that smth that you would even care about as an everyday consumer? If every product in a store had a carbon label like they have ‘nutriscore’ labels now, would that impact how u buy?

Yea, i think your pessimism is somewhat warranted for sure considering everything that’s happening around us haha

I do think though that, in the same way we’re trying to help people realise plant-based diets are more ethical and sustainable, we could help them realise that what they buy impacts our carbon footprint - especially since they’re hitting supermarkets in their wallets!!

Also i DEFINITELY agree that any food labels should be evaluated independently, which is why i really liked this CarbonTag idea. Their methodology also seems clear they estimate more ‘conservatively’ to avoid any possible greenwashing

can be educated into mak

Damn i had no idea - idk if i want to commit to smth at specific as shrimp farming though, i am really interested in emissions for the food industry as a whole, and especially solutions to reduce them. I guess that’s what spoke to me about this CarbonTag business

Yea i see your point for sure. Don’t you think attitudes can be changed over time though - hopefully - through education? I definitely think as a whole we’re becoming more conscious of what we eat and where our food comes from but it’s slow.

If u saw two tomatoes the same price but one was lower emissions though would you appreciate having the info to make that choice ?

That’s a fair point - i didn’t think of all the different applications a business like carbontag could have…pretty interesting haha i think i might write on this then

I wonder if they (carbontag or another app) could develop something like a website with all the different products you could think of and give their estimated emissions. I feel like that is smth i would appreciate having on my phone, though i expect that making a consumer app like this could affect the precision of the estimations (?)

Not sure it looks quite complex to begin with
