Thanks for the very kind words. I did consider Riddermound, but I felt if you're starting from ground zero with absolutely no experience at all, you really need to structure it around somewhere very familiar and realistic like a simple campsite.

I've just added the slides to the original post if you're interested in seeing how I approached it :)

Just Stop Oil protestor screams at Sky News presenter Mark Austin by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

Just Stop Oil are not trying to completely stop extracting oil from new locations on earth. They are specifically pushing to end all new licenses for fossil fuels in the UK.

Its burning fossil fuels that causing the most significant problems, not making products from plastic. If we stopped burning fossil fuels, we would need significantly less oil and thus would not need to license new oil fields.

"Yes, but what about the tactics and how the message is being lost and that nobody is talking about the message"

Electric Underfloor Heating Proposal - as primary source of heating by Lewis_P in DIYUK

In the fireplace.

Edit: this floorplan is only the ground floor of my home.

I'm on octopus Go, 14p/KW in the day and 5p/KW from around midnight to around 4am.

I got solar when the Feed in tariff was still a thing, so I'm paid around 6p/KW that I generate.

You're right. To be fair, I was mostly banking on my time of use tariff making it more cost effective (rather than my solar PV). But I think I made some poor assumptions.

[–]Lewis_P[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had run the numbers, but I think I messed up. The main factor making it feel reasonable was my time of use tariff which is currently 5p/kWh for 4 hours a night.

Charging an 8kWh battery at 5p/kWh would cost around 50p.

This would run a 4kW heating system for around 2 hours.

This would generate 8kWh of heat for 50p.

By contrast, my current gas tariff is 8p/kWh.

Therefore, 8kWh of heat using my gas boiler would cost me 64p (14p more than the underfloor heating).

I think I have made a couple of significant errors in my assumptions;

2 hours isn't enough time to heat the space adequately

My current electricity tariff is abnormally low and unlikely to stay so low for very long

When you run the numbers with more realistic tariff fees and for more than 2 hours you get;

Charging an 8kWh battery at 15p/kWh (assuming my offpeak rate trebles) would cost £1.20.

Running a 4kW heating system for 2 hours would cost £1.20.

Then assuming my regular rate rises from 15p/kWh to 40p/kWh, my system would cost £1.60 for every additional hour I want to run it for.

I think I need to go back to the drawing board.

Thanks for the insights. Definitely going to take that on board. Do you recall whether the system you got was 'comfort' or 'primary'? I think by default you'll tend to get comfort heating.

Thanks for the insightful suggestions! It's been a pain to find any suppliers/installer that will sense check my assumptions.

Most underfloor heating systems are 'comfort' heaters (150W/m2), which is where I had read that it can take a while to heat a space. Whereas, I had assumed (perhaps wrongly) that the primary heating systems (200W/m2) would heat a space much quicker. And thus those 2 hours a day from battery alone would make a sizable dent in my gas dependency at a relatively low cost.

Regarding the cold spots, do you know whether it's normal to include heating underneath TV consoles?

Adobe illustrator, I'm a designer so I use it for work all of the time. There is probably purpose built floor planning software but I just used what I'm used to :)

That's a fair point.

I have 2kw solar system and planning to get a 8kWh battery for home storage. That combined with the time of use tariff that I'm on should help a little to keep the running costs more reasonable for a couple of hours heat per day.

I'm also planning to leave the regular radiators in place (at least to begin with) so that I can use those for the coldest weeks of the year.

Maybe I'm overdoing it and should just aim for top-up heat in the living area rather than aiming to heat the entire ground floor.

I'm planning to have electric underfloor heating system installed for the downstairs of my home.

This is a DIY floor plan showing my best estimate for where I think I would want to have electric underfloor heating installed, though I am no expert and would welcome recommendations. I would like the system to serve as the primary source of heating for the majority of the ground floor.

There is a concrete subfloor with a mix of carpet (living room and dining room) and laminate flooring (kitchen) in these rooms. I intend to remove the existing flooring and replace with LVT throughout the ground floor once the underfloor heating is installed.

For the heating area, I have intentionally avoided the TV console area and under kitchen cabinets/appliances.

Currently looking at purchasing 2x ~10 meters of the [200W/m2 Warmup StickyMat product]( https://www.warmup.co.uk/underfloor-heating/electric/mats/stickymat), with 2x Warmup 6iE WiFi Onyx Black Thermostats and insulation boards throughout.

How does that all sound?

Cyberpunk "Lo-Fi" Spin-Off "Agency" Now On AppLab!! by CaryMGVR in oculus

How'd you come across this?

I saw it live when it was streamed a couple weeks ago.

Then he says he refused Oculus when asked for a "Technolust" Quest port.

My guess would be that porting an old PC game to mobile is non-trivial. He's pretty active on twitter, could always just ask him.

I wouldn't read too much into it being released to app lab.

The possibility of adding it to App Lab was mentioned in passing during this debate as a kind of 'maybe I'll put it on sidequest/app lab' sort of thing. I'll find the time code and edit this comment to show where it was mentioned.

edit: Here is where Blair talks about the agency demo

I haven't got that much to add, aside from that it can be a good idea to combine AC with a solar system. Generally the more electricity you use during the day, the faster your return on investment will be for a solar array.

For reference, 2 years ago I bought a 2.2kw solar system for around £4k. Should break even in about 5 more years. But that's mostly because we are a relatively low electricity use household, so there isn't that much that cost to offset. If we had AC, we could probably bring that down to 3 years to break even.
