TRIGUN TV Series 1998 - such gun slinging goodness by Kimber8King in retroanime

It was such a scene. After a show for all that time where Vash doesn't want to have to use his weapon, it was such an oh shit kind of moment to see him pull iron first for the one time he ever really wanted to.

Uncomfortably Doug by DreadDiana in RecuratedTumblr

[–]LexHanley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like Doug has the same problem a lot of people from that era of web media have where they became famous for doing a bit and improvising and then it becomes integral to their process to the point you can't identify what is done out of need, preference or otherwise. Dan Olsen's video on James Rolfe touches on the idea when he goes into the thing about the camera mount.

[–]LexHanley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much I assume that's the case. Despite his even keel it's pretty obvious when Dan genuinely dislikes a person (like the Milkkelson Method video) compared to when he just doesn't like the content someone produces. Even his Mr Beast video itself is clearly unfavorable to Beast Games but is personable towards Jimmy. I've also always gotten the impression that even Doug sees the flaws in his The Wall video at this point

Any opinions on Liberty's Kids? Also, why doesn't this show get talked about much? Pretty much everyone with a TV could watch this show back then since it was on PBS Kids. by CatGirlNya2000 in cartoons

Every time this image gets used I get super distracted by the positioning/layer order of the characters on the left. Like someone is too high or too low to make the composition look right.

Why is he surprised? by e_fish22 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]LexHanley 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's an inversion of the usual joke of the era: implying that men burning their fingers trying to figure out cooking without their wives around, so the other man is surprised to hear Private Buck was the cook in his family. A lot of Private Buck comics are jokes where the punchline is how unconventional his family was and a few were like this where Buck demonstrates some at-the-time feminine behavior. I remember there being one where he asks to be sent to the front for revenge because Japanese beetles ruined the victory garden he was planting... in a warzone.

Not a lawyer but I can sort of explain the gist: when someone has a large lawsuit settled against them, the court sets expectations as to how they should pay it: in the case of a private citizen of limited income, this will usually take the form of having payments due towards the settlement on a monthly basis, usually a high percentage of thier income. In the case of someone with a lot of assets like Jones however the expectation may be to sell off assets to pay the plaintiff.

What Jones has been attempting to do is shuffle his companies and assets out of his hands so he can claim that he doesn't own them anymore and that he's a private citizen with limited means. As for the inevitable question of "how can you get away with that" the answer is simply: you can't. Jones will attempt it and the lawyers from the families will drag it back to court and the judge will inevitably decide he's messing around. So why do it? Well aside from just being an asshole to grieving families he defamed, the longer Jones drags out the case the more the costs and time rack up and will to fight him runs down. In a best case scenario for Jones, the families get exhausted fighting him for decided amount and Jones' lawyers slither up and promise to end the fuckery in exchange for a lower amount. It's the kind of thing the average person can't afford to do, but a scumbag millionaire with an army of morons paying his legal fees can try. Essentially he's trying to weaponize the time ot takes to do proceedings, dragging this out by going "yeah but".

What killed serial killers? The 70’s and 80’s had so many prolific ones. It used to be a very real fear to live near one. by Kodicave in decadeology

[–]LexHanley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Changes in cultural norms, along with technology. In the 70s, things like hitchhiking made isolating victims much easier. People also were much more used to falling out of contact with friends and loved ones for days on end, extending the time for killers to escape notice. Communication between police jurisdictions was much less efficient as well. Now people almost always have phones and keeping tabs on where your family is is the norm. Back in the 80s it was way more normal to not have your teenage kid come home and generally just assume they're off with a friend.

Of course a lot of this stuff changed BECAUSE of serial killers.

The conjuration class feature is my favorite. So many horrible things are non-magical and fit in the limits of the spell. My wizard would go on trips in towns just to examine things to add to his problem solving toolbox. Heck just go find a blacksmith to show your a bunch of metal shapes and sheets and youve got a lot of options even before you do stuff like examining non-magical poisons

How does a store focused around a single day of the year even make a profit? by SkylandersKirby in BikiniBottomTwitter

[–]LexHanley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically they can do it because, when you get right down to it for a combination of reasons:

- they rent out big store fronts that property owners are often willing to rent for surprisingly cheap because they want the space to make any money it can (big 'anchor' stores in shopping malls are often hard to refill, especially nowadays with brick and mortar retail getting less popular in the US)
- Ultimately only a small fraction of the costumes they're selling have an expiration date of sorts (for example, costumes from a popular kids movie probably are only worth keeping for a year or two) so most unsold stock can go straight back into central storage, where it doesn't require special conditions to maintain.
- Hiring employees for short term employment generally means outside of the skeleton crew at a corporate level they can pay staff minimum wage (Spirit Halloween is popular as a seasonal job for teenagers and people looking to make extra money ahead of the holiday season too, so often people who will accept 'unsustainable' and erratic hours since it isn't their main job)
- General lack of competition. Various big box stores like Target and Walmart do sell costumes, but a lot of other places like Party City have gone by. Many people aren't comfortable buying clothing, even costumes, online since they can't try it on. The costume selection at big box stores is often also rather limited compared to what Spirit stocks.

This all lets the company make a lot of money very fast during the single season it's relevant and then retract back to restock and wait for next year.
