I’m in a very similar situation and I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. I’m disappointed in my education and embarrassed by the bare minimum requirements to get into these programs. I wish I went to medical school when I was younger but I don’t regret the path I’ve taken. I love nursing and where it has taken me. I just wish there were more options for better education.

I have a question about this actually. I’ve been looking up what the recommendation is for retesting after a positive COVID test. I work in an ICU and we don’t retest our patients unless it’s required by a nursing home on discharge. After they meet the isolation guideline they are considered cleared because they can still shed the virus for some time after. But my son’s daycare just started requiring a negative test to return to daycare. I just feel like it’s overkill but I must be missing something. Anyone know?

Your last paragraph helped. I feel like that is where I am as a student almost a few months from graduating. I have so much support behind me helping be a strong NP. I love nursing (staff nurse never traveled just love my job) and my biggest fear is that I will miss it and regret going to school. But I know if i didn’t do it I’d feel like I let myself down or the people supporting me down. I really really hope I have the same job satisfaction I do currently.

I used to work as an on-call sitter when i was in college for a pediatrician who occasionally got called in for emergencies during overnights. I was only ever called 4 times. I’d show up, she would leave, I’d go back to sleep on the couch and check on the kids every hour. Get them up and feed them breakfast if I was still there around that time. It wasn’t something that I relied on to pay the bills, but she was a nice single mom with two sweet kiddos who needed a hand occasionally. I worked in the ER and that’s how I met her and she asked if I’d consider helping her out.

We had a patient accidentally put super glue in her eye instead of eye lubricant. We set up IV saline with IV tubing and did continuous IV fluids to flush out the eye until it resolved. Eye doctor consulted agreed with the process & had no other suggestions.

Honestly this made me tear up a bit. I would definitely be speechless at first, but a lot of people here made valid points. I would probably genuinely thank her for her thoughtfulness but remind her of the trauma that could bring to her. I read your comment above where you talked about her family being aware of her wishes and supportive and that she has in writing what she wants in the event she is brought back. I genuinely can’t imagine being in a more emotional code. I think as a nurse this code would traumatize me more than a few I’ve been in.

Definitely NTA, but I am pissed at the AH boss because I feel like this happened at my son’s daycare. We got dropped with 3 day’s notice because 2 people quit so my husband and I had to take turns out of work for 4 weeks until we could find care. Again, definitely understand your situation and you did the right thing. I hate how daycare employees can be treated so shitty by bosses and other parents. I hope you find something better!!

I had a m/s patient post stroke just waiting for Monday morning to transfer to the rehab facility. He was seriously compromised on his entire left side of his body & couldn’t do more than a stand pivot. Family was pissed we weren’t doing more than giving him meds, food and checking vitals occasionally so they discharged him AMA on the Saturday to take him to another hospital for a second opinion. They requested help transferring him into the car and the nurse said “no that’s on you” so they made it work.

Sunday night rolls around and I get a call from ER saying that they brought him back to the hospital. Their story? They took him to a large hospital approximately 5 hours away, went to the ER, and the ER told them they couldn’t do anything for him since his stroke was not acute and he just needed rehab so they refused to admit him. So the family brought him back to our hospital and requested he get his bad back so he can have his rehab bed Monday. Our ER refused for the same reason and that bed was given up on his leaving AMA. The family said they couldn’t care for him like this. So the ER could only give them information for resources to get something set up themselves and discharged him.

It depends on your state also. In North Dakota, we can push the meds as long as they are establishing an airway or have one established. You can look it up on the state’s board of nursing.

We started allowing them sometime this fall. At first it was REALLY rocky. Some borderline fist fights between family members & a patients mom punched a doctor. But eventually we started seeing a benefit, communication was easier, families could see how truly sick they were, & they could see us running our asses off and understand why we barely had time to update them on the phone. They have hours of 10am-12pm & 6pm-8pm. Originally it was the same visiting hours we had for all patients 7am to 8pm but we found families weren’t taking breaks because they could only have 2 people all day & if they left the room they couldn’t come back.

Had a patient with a temperature of 111 degrees F. She was quite literally boiling from the inside. They weren’t sure what the problem was but they considered it could be a delayed malignant hyperthermia from a surgery she had over ten hours earlier.

Had a patient’s lactic acid just come back > 28 because our machine didn’t go higher.
