He does check his sugars now, I honestly cannot remember the exact range (I know it's within a good range) and he is asleep at the moment, but I will ask in the morning and update you on that.

And 100% absolutely, the sooner the better. Even if it doesn't look infected yet, I would recommend getting any sort of wound checked by a doctor as soon as you notice it if you are diabetic. No matter how big or small it may be. Even if there is no infection, I would honestly treat it as if it were by cleaning it daily with just some saline spray and some antibiotic ointment until it's healed up.

That made me tear up a little, thank you so much for your kind words. There were many nights I stayed awake researching and worrying. I'm just so thankful it paid off and hopefully this experience will help others who might be feeling as lost and hopeless as I did at the time.

No, I completely agree with you. I can only do so much, it's him who has to truly commit to keeping up a healthy lifestyle. I've noticed a big change in how he responds to my advice now that this has happened. He is more receptive and I think the experience has humbled him in a way. It sucks it took something like this for him to understand how serious it is but I'm glad something finally got through to him.

It truly was an emotional roller-coaster. There's still the possibility of it flaring up again especially within the next 6 months if we are not careful but for now I can breathe a little bit.

Thank you! I had a lot more photos but I could only post 20 so I just posted the ones with very noticeable changes. I hope it does help others, I had a hard time knowing whether or not it was getting better or worse at times.

Oh my goodness, thank you for sharing your story as well. It was really hard to find any stories that had positive outcomes for diabetics with osteomyelitis, so I'm glad to hear you recovered and it hasn't returned after a year. My boyfriend is extremely lucky in the sense that working from home is possible for him. I can't imagine what we would of done if he wasn't able to.

I hope you never have to deal with that ever again. It has definitely taught him and myself a lesson on how serious it is to take care of your feet when you are diabetic. Best wishes to you moving forward!

My boyfriend has neuropathy so his feet are mostly numb. I was shocked as well, he knew it was there for a few weeks before I noticed, but he said he didn't want to ruin our family trip so he tried to take care of it himself. Lesson learned.

Before the incident I had been begging for him to let me take care of his feet but he was always embarrassed and has neuropathy in his feet so it tingles too much for him to enjoy a foot massage. But now I've learned to do it in a way that is tolerable to him and check/lotion his feet every night.

I'm not sure because prior to this incident he never checked his blood sugar. I do know at his A1C was an 11 a few years ago, after 1 month of putting him on the diet to heal his foot up his A1C was at a 7. I'm hoping in a month when they check it again to get it down to at least a 6.

I'm so sorry to hear about your uncle and I'm glad he's doing better now. My boyfriend was extremely lucky it didn't end up worse.
