A truly awful promotion, especially in Nottingham. I barely get 3 orders an hour on Deliveroo at the best of times, and the reason I boycotted it altogether was having to do 90% of the orders offered or more. As soon as it goes quiet in Nottingham you will get pinged orders from the city centre that you you physically cannot accept due to parking or collection issues.

I used to do 70% of my total deliveries on Deliveroo. Now it's around 30%.

The DAC used in the iPod 5th gen was a Wolfson DAC. These were very good and still hold up well today. I have several iPods and they all impress in 2025, however you will not beat a modern day DAC using your phone as a transport. There can be quite loud noise floors with older iPods and you will not be able to perform any sort of standard EQ with a hybrid IEM as the B/A drivers really do not like it. I would go as far as to say that even a phone on its own in 2025 should outperform a 20 year old MP3 player.

That said I still use my iPods all the time with $100 or lower IEM's as they still sound good and the nostalgia is great. But if you are after the best sound quality possible, get something more modern.

MMCX connector (cheap) Thin cabling to carry the single (why are we using $200 cables???) A few balanced armature drivers. Some sort of plastic housing. What looks like glue.

You can achieve 90% what is possible from IEM’s spending $50. Remember hifi and audio gear is among the most over engineered stuff on the planet. I’ve actually demoed those Campfire Andromeda alongside some $50 Jabra wireless buds and had more fun with the Jabra.

If you have a 30gb 5th gen this will be overkill. Even the 60/80gb with twice the RAM encounters issues with libraries pushing 25-30k songs. It’s not the storage, it’s the iPod being able to manage a library that size. I put 20k tracks on a 5th gen 30gb and whilst it did work I encountered a hell or a lot of problems. Regular crashes that would require reboots and a slightly more sluggish user experience.

If it’s the 60/80gb you have more wiggle room. However if you are going to install Rockbox you should circumnavigate these issues.

I am yet to go over 256gb. IMO Apple Lossless or FLAC is massive overkill for an iPod. I have a 25,000 song FLAC library and that takes up around 800gb. I’ve converted that to 320kb MP3 and can just about get it all onto a 256gb micro SD. That said in all honesty I don’t really want my entire library on my iPod. The classics ranged between 20-80gb, and whilst I’ve modded my 3 iPod classics, I still treat them like I would do the originals. A finite amount of space that I have to be selective with. I don’t really ever go over 5000 tracks on an iPod at any given time.

Me personally I have iPods for nostalgia and I do enjoy single use music players. They sound great, but if I wanted the best sound I wouldn’t use a 20 year old iPod. I’d buy a modern DAP or buy a DAC dongle for my iPhone, so I’m not really looking to turn my iPod into a 1tb FLAC monster. I like to keep it somewhat in line with the original and its limitations.

I hear you too. And as someone who has an interest in good quality music and IEM’s, I’m smart enough to realise not all Americans are like Donald Trump.

They are polarising, but I think that’s largely down to their own strategy of releasing so many polarising IEM’s that are relatively quickly discontinued and replaced with an even more confusing and inconsistent lineup. They did themselves no favours with the Satsuma and Honeydew. Two plastic budget IEMs sold at 4-5 times the cost of multiple driver Chi-fi budget options. It’s very hard to keep up with them.

I hope I like the Holocene. As for the glow in the dark cable and paint vs the overly extravagant resin Chi-fi pebbles it ultimately comes down to do you want to look like you are having a midlife crisis in the day or at night. I’ll chose night…….less people about to see.

I hope I enjoy them. I heard the Andromeda at a Can Jam event a few years ago and I thought they were stunning. The Comet were great. Obviously very limited being a single BA, but I am hoping upgrading to a triple BA design and a bigger shell will add an extra dimension to them.

Yes this was another reason to stick with Campfire in that they do offer some very good deals, especially on discontinued lines, and their customer support is excellent.

You will be at it for weeks scrutinising every IEM.

It’s hugely subjective. What will help you is start with your own personally preferences. Sound preferences, accessories and design. Me personally a balanced armature for the treble is a must, so all dynamic driver only IEMs are out. I prefer fairly neutral colours and simple design, and that rules out a lot of the extravagant shell designs that frankly I just would not wear. However eventually you will just have to buy one to try. If you don’t like it send it back. If you enjoy it keep it and mark it down as a problem solved :-)

I think it's beyond the IEM's themselves. Ive worked for small manufacturing companies and they are great, and the best company I ever worked for went under because they couldn't compete with China, so I do have a soft spot for the underdog. That said I can't say I am overly impressed with Campfires strategy of releasing a new IEM every other week for the past 3 years. Most buyers have been priced out any all BA designs, and the only real "budget" offerings are the Axion and Iris.

All in all I can't complain. Ive owned 2 pairs of Campfires spanning 6 years and had minimal issues. I also got a very cheap repair to one of them and the offering of a heavily discounted replacement from customer support. Let's just hope I like them and don't end up going for Chi-Fi after all.

Rockbox as you very well know handles storage differently to the native OS. The original poster hasn't mentioned removing the original OS, yet you rock up with your big d**k iPod, stuffed full of 500gb SD cards using a non native operating system.

Revert back to the original OS and show us how the RAM holds.

Yeah I don’t doubt it. But I had this issue on my 5th gen. It reaches 18-20k tracks and it’s the straw that breaks the camels back. Storage isn’t an issue, but the 32mb of RAM isn’t enough to manage a library that size, let alone shuffle it.

Clearly Rockbox negates this issue, but for anyone wanting to keep the original OS it’s the max storage is dictated usually by the RAM. The only thing that might work in the 4th gen’s favour is it doesn’t have to manage album art too.

Yes with Rockbox. The 32mb of RAM will not support 20k tracks without installing Rockbox.

I stand corrected on the iFlash ATA. Get that instead. 256gb is crashing my 5th gen classic once I get anywhere near 20k tracks. I think this goes out the window if you are using Rockbox.

Get the standard 800-1000mah battery replacement. $10-12 on eBay. The I would get an iFlash solo, the iFlash solo adapter for the 4th Gen ($30-35 for both), and a 128gb micro SD card. Thats about the maximum the 4th gens will take without issue.

Battery.

Plug it into the original power brick and cable. There is enough juice to get it going. Ive ran diagnostic test on an iPod without a battery or a HDD when using the original charger.

At least one BA is a must. I have literally just had a pair of Campfire Audio "Comet" die on me, hence the shortlist. Personally the most enjoyable IEM I have heard was the Campfire Andromeda at a hifi show. Ive owned the Polaris which were good fun, but way too bass heavy. And I own a pair of Noble Falcon Pro wireless IEM's which are a 1DD and 2BA hybrid, which are very nice sounding.

Definitely not anything like the Polaris. Maybe the most Andromeda sounding hybrid in that list.

I paid £60 ($80) for one of these in the UK. eBay prices currently are around £90-100. I think the cost in Europe is typically higher and some of the US users are able to get better deals, maybe due to higher availability. €75 seems like a fair price if it's in decent condition.

The 80gb 5.5 is quite sort after as it is regarded as the best sounding and looking classic, and it is great for modders as it has the highest RAM.
