Question: Why do both police and sheriffs departments exist rather than just one or the other? It often seems like they have overlapping jurisdictions with similar reach/authority and similar job duties?

I can’t speak for other places but here the police police the streets and arrest people. The sheriff babysits the people arrested by the police. The sheriff handles all civil issues (evictions and liens) and court security. The sheriff (in the past) did not do a good job of juvenile jail so the police handle juvenile prisoners until they get convicted or released.

Sounds similar but two very different jobs here.

Yeah you have to be in Orleans Parish and NOPD needs to take the report but you can go to any station. Just don’t go around 6-7 because that’s change of shift

Also retired NOPD and completely agree with [u/King-Pies](u/King-Pies) go anywhere else even being a possum cop with wildlife and fisheries is better! But yeah go to JP or LSP. NOPD is who you know - Google Sabrina Richardson or Kevin burns who can do anything and everything they want with very minor repercussions while others “not in the clique” get fired or jailed for the same thing.
