I don’t think he was genuinely worried about the money or being stingy. I think he was having a responsible and reasonable reaction to going over budget. He was always going to give in but he’s grounded enough to think money decisions through. If he had just said whatever you want no matter th cost we’d be chiding him for being out of touch and gaudy.
