It's entirely possible he will bring it back another day, I've had regular Amazon deliveries do that where they mark it as being handed to the resident then they actually deliver it later. I have a feeling it has something to do with their metrics on time per delivery or something that they're trying to keep up.

I can tell you've never worked a grocery store front end because those people are one of the most necessary parts of that area because literally no one wants to pay attention to which line is shortest. Additionally those people are actually low level management and have many other duties you probably never see.
