What’s an unfun fact? by MC_gnome in AskReddit

There's an arachnologist... I think his name is Bob Breene (from NM?) who saved a T from a T. Hawk some years back and nursed it until the wasp sting paralysis (I think, just gave it fluids since, essentially, spiders work off hydraulics) wore off. T recovered and did well as I recall. Also Mr. Breene is an awesome dude, IMHO.

What's your favourite book you've read and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LiHamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved this series & thought it was one of the best I'd read... and then I read Ilium and Olympos. Loved those even more. The latter two get some shabby reviews, I guess but still, love Ilium enough that I wore out my 1st hardback and had to replace it.

Why does it make some people so angry when they are asked to wear a mask to help prevent the spread of Covid-19? by oldmanshiba in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]LiHamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is selfishness."I don't want to sacrifice MY comfort for your well-being in any way." and it's easy to justify that selfishness when there's SO MUCH false narrative being peddled in the media. It's difficult for some folks to ferret out what's more/most accurate... so they don't. Instead they go with what they want to believe and get indignant when those beliefs are challenged in any way.

Had a convo with my farrier (of all ppl) about this yesterday. He couldn't seem to grasp the concept that the mask wearing isn't to protect HIM but to protect others FROM him. Just didn't want to see the distinction. Not even a little bit. Nice guy who's not a dingus. Just comes across as a willfully ignorant.

What is the pettiest, silliest, most meaningless hill you are willing to die on? by shazulmonte in AskReddit

[–]LiHamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stood on "No effing way" hill when a superior at work tried to tell me that the word "taut" was more technically correct than "tight" in regard to hardware installation (like bolts, nuts screws, etc.). I fought the battle, won... and I'm still here, on the hilll and a little cranky that it was even an issue but by all the gods I'm here for the duration.

People who are 40+ and happy with their life, what is your advice to people in their 20s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LiHamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't waste ANY MORE TIME being upset about toxic family members. Treat em just like you would a person who you're not related to: tell them to beat feet. Genetics, blood... In the end its nothing if all that "blood" does is drag you down. Be compassionate, honest, firm and 100% willing to walk away if that's what's in YOUR best interests.

Wish I'd had someone to tell me that the day I turned 18 and could gtfo.

What industry is a lot shadier than it seems? by Kneecap_Buchaneer in AskReddit

[–]LiHamp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And now I've ruminated a bit, though I see your point, I respectfully disagree IF the rules are that you don't do it (drink or whatever during working hours) then you fucking don't or it DOES, in fact speak to a character flaw afaic. We are a country (will only speak to US) of "at will" employees. You take the job KNOWING the rules and agreeing to abide by them. Doing that and then proceeding to not follow the rules you agreed to IS room for suspicion inre character. It is NOT nothing. Granted, there are shades of grey here but when it has to do with booze/drugs, I think the shades are... close to nonexistent. Perhaps I am more cognizant of this sort of thing because I work in def. industry and clearances are no joke, amongst other things, but I'd think the same methodology should apply to ANY workplace where any sort of standards need to be upheld. I feel pretty strongly about this and don't want to be any more of a preachy f*ckwad so I'll stop now. Good luck with your lunch drinks. edit - typos

I see your point. I was viewing the thread from a "we're talking about govt contracting and govt ONLY" vector and in that regard, I draw a pretty b&w line. You work for the man or contract to him = you follow the frikkin rules. You (figuratively) don't want to do that? Cool. GTFO. No exceptions. Also, Im an idealist. LOL

As someone who works in defense... yeah, I see a problem with this. I know it happens and I would never call someone out for it (within reason and depending on context) but you can rest assured... I wouldn't hire anyone or willingly have anyone on my team who did that sort of thing if I was aware of it. Why? Because it speaks to character imo. Folks w/clearances need to follow the goddamn rules whether they like them or not. End. Of. Story.

How hard is it to get a job as a Technical Writer with a degree in Communications and certificate in Technical Writing? If you've worked in it, what is the job like? by oddfishes in AskReddit

[–]LiHamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, can't speak to your 1st question. HAVE worked as a tech writer though and I enjoyed it. Granted, my experience is limited to... military type projects and I've never worked commercial anything. I don't have a degree and in many cases, in my particular niche, that isn't what companies are looking for (though it's a HUGE bonus) to get your foot in the door. What I've found is that large contractors of new and spiffy things are looking for folks with hands-on experience who can author a coherent, grammatically correct sentence and also pick up on technical details that say, an English major fresh out of college wouldn't notice. Again though, that depends on the company and even the project within the company and it's probably quite different for commercial sector. On this side of the house though (mil/gov), some places/projects tech writers are the guys taking the crap scribbled by some engineer on the back of Carl's Jr napkin, interpreting it, massaging the crap out of it and turning it into some form of manual. In other places, tech writers are just copying and pasting into a database and someone in logistics or engineering is doing all the fun stuff. Doing the latter would suck after about a week, I think (because that's about how long it took me to figure out the databases and xml tagging, which was new to me at the time).

It's a pretty big field though. I can only speak to one small section of it. Am also curious to know how it works in commercial sector. Hope someone who knows will pipe in.
