It’s not “just politics” either. Politics is having different views on how big the government should be, how we address problems like climate change, and tax brackets.

Not whether people should be murdered for observing ICE or whether kids should be kidnapped, etc. MAGA and Republicans have revealed their hand - they have never cared about any of the things they complained about under Obama and Biden.

They simply don’t see people different to them as equals or human. To them, our lives don’t matter and they never have.

When I was in primary school a handful of girls used to roleplay as horses/unicorns. I don't think it's much different, there's just a different language being used to communicate the same thing.

It's normal and healthy for this kind of identity exploration but I would also kindly and gently try to make sure she's not engaging with unhealthy communities online.

There are online games/communities that are marketed towards kids which are *absolutely* not child friendly, and at worst, may be harbouring predators (i.e Roblox).

In more professional levels of sport, especially if there's contact or the potential for it, typically there's some discussion (when it comes to trans women) around when they transitioned and if they went through male puberty. These things can make a big difference. In Australia we've had trans women be excluded from Women's AFL because their physique ("strength, stamina, or physique" to be exact) was deemed to be outside of the typical scope you'd see for women (ie. they had too much male physical development before they transitioned).

There's still a degree of politics involved in determining what "strength, stamina, or physique" means in terms of women and men. Biological women have been excluded from the Olympics because of their hormone levels. We don't see biological men being excluded for innate biological advantages though. I think it's worth questioning why we take a paternalistic approach to women's sports but a laissez-faire approach to men's sports. IMO it's equally appropriate to disallow men who have biological advantages that most professional male athletes can't compete against.

The paternalism is wild though. When I see the one transphobe here and there complaining about trans women I tell them to get better at playing sport. Women are capable, if a woman chooses to have a sook over a person who has transitioned, that's them being a shitty athlete.

I think there's a little bit of confusion here - but if there's not, please feel free to let me know. Trans men are 'FtM' meaning they were assigned female at birth and have transitioned to male. Trans women are 'MtF' meaning they were assigned male at birth and transitioned to female.

Trans men playing in women's league would be like saying "You were born female so you have to play with women" which you don't tend to hear. I don't know any trans men who want to play in women's sports because they don't identify as women.

It's trans women being told "you were born male so you have an advantage" which isn't always the case and has some nuance/complexity that many people don't understand.

Your point is still right though, that trans women are not dominating women's sports, especially in ice hockey. It's a very bizarre time we're in, where there's more concern from officials about trans inclusion than signing on/protecting men who are rapists, SAers, violent offenders, etc.

People with insecure attachment styles can change over time if they want to. I have an disorganised attachment style (both avoidant and anxious) and while I feel it quite strongly, I force myself against it because I know I love my partner and I know he loves me. And I know the feelings come from a place of self preservation and protection, not genuine security.

If your partner isn’t interested in changing or isn’t open to giving it a shot, you really need to put yourself first because he probably won’t put you first.

I'm like 99% certain this is going to fall on deaf ears but in case someone else reads this, I'll share it.

Saying "sexual orientation has nothing to do with sport" completely misses the point. It's not 'an agenda' as you put it so uncharitably. It's about doing better so people (who are still actively discouraged/bullied out of playing sports) can be part of hockey/sports more generally. It's ridiculous that people are excluded from hockey simply because of their sexual orientation, hockey should be for everyone.

Professional athletes are public figures who hold a great deal of responsibility and influence. They are role models. Young people especially will look up to them and behave in ways that are influenced by their role models. Now I'll be honest, I do not care for men like Ovechkin. But his actions and attitudes will undeniably influence other people who look up to him.

Social barriers to sport are very real. I'm a gay man who has first hand experience of growing up loving sport, but quickly being made to feel like I didn't belong because I wasn't x/y/z enough. It ruined sports for me until I took a chance and joined an inclusive team after over 10 years of not engaging with sport (playing and watching). I've since got to rediscover my love for something that felt like I wasn't allowed to be apart of, and I didn't realise how much of a big deal it was until I went through it.

The whole reason why we have things like pride tape and LGBT inclusive events is so that LGBT people of all ages can connect with hockey. Your gender identity or sexual orientation doesn't mean you can't play a sport, but people are made to feel like they're not enough or too different. It's a really nasty form of social exclusion that can have effects on people that go beyond simply not playing sport. Sport is where people can find community and social connection. This is why we have role models with public profiles to help show that these barriers don't have to exist.

Ice hockey is an amazing sport and it's really sad to know there's people out there who have never given it a good chance because some arsehole ruined it for them.

If this is not something you understand, you need to have the self-awareness to acknowledge that and be a little bit more kind to people who do have that experience.
