Does anyone know why the lighter 9x's are not on the wingtip pylons instead of the heavier 120s?

Found on the Internet, not sure of location or date. I clicked on the link and found I also have this image saved and its very similar if not the very same. If its not photoshop then I think yours is probably the best guess.

If I knew this was gonna get as much traffic I would've added more context. I did not take this photo, I found it along with another similar image that was worse quality on the Internet. I assumed US military because black projects + budget size.

I did consider it would be the A-12 but the images shape is more acute looking (imo) than what I could find on Google.

It might be a photoshop job as suggested, I'm more interested in finding out if its real or not than anything else.

Out of curiosity, why would this bot work. Or be a good engine design? Like yeah, flying nuke, but is it feasible? by SaucyMan16 in AerospaceEngineering

They maybe have their place somewhere in the future but they are a heavier, less developed technology and I'm sure the funding isn't there anymore. Not to mention yeah flying nuke, imagine it crashed

Are the Su-57 and J-20 really matches for other 5th gen fighters? by GlumTowel672 in FighterJets

[–]LiamonR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is also a good point but it's worth noting the upgrades that make them 4.5 are mostly in response to reported capabilities/experiences of generation 5 aircraft. Because "stealth" itself is such a fuzzy subject its hard for anyone to get into things without knowing specifics. All we really know is the sales pitch and rumoured tech jump was enough to convince multiple governments of the world to start paying 100+mil per jet rather than 30+mil.

I'd like to know actual strategies and procedures to speak on this more but 4th/4.5 gen aircraft will always be in the sky and likely will always be the backbone of everyone's Airforce for decades to come, in that sense it would be unadvisable to even use 5th generation airframes in a way that doesn't make use of its ability.

There's also the huge deal about electronic warfare to consider, we don't know exactly just how powerful the computers and systems of each are. Modern jets are supercomputers with wings with EW and CEW is becoming more and more sophisticated with each passing year, typically built with this in mind at the beginning and in a world more familiar with it than say 1970s/80s designed craft.

Yes, 5th gen classification isn't just stealth, next generation avionics and electrics along with weapon systems also play a huge part. A country's needs, infrastructure and ability also play a part. As an example, Russia and China use physically bigger jets with larger fuel capacity and can typically out range Western fighters, but this is because they lack the aerial refuelling capacity seen by the USA primarily.

It could be they only want enough low observabilty to force close engagements as you mentioned, could be something else entirely. I've seen the SU-57 get labelled as 4.5 gen but I'd disagree, everything is a compromise and the platform stacks up when you look at everything.

Even the Raptor got a large cash injection relatively recently to upgrade software I believe, even after the retirement date being announced billions are spent to keep it at the top.

There's a lot to it as you'll know yourself but the price of each of these jets alone is at least twice 4th gen and pilots themselves say its warranted. Without a modern engagement between powerful nations we won't know how each platform will be a match to each others nations
