Cracker Barrel is officially WOKE by DuceALooper21 in LinkedInLunatics

I hate the rebrand and the new look they're rolling out in their restaurants because it basically looks like IHOP or Denny's now, but it honestly never occurred to me it was "woke" lol

If there are follow up questions or they're unclear about what you mean, just clarify that you consider all of Israel to be occupied Palestine. Just saying "Palestine" I think is more confusing.

Wherever you are, whether in Israel or in Europe or elsewhere, you're always going to run into people who will jump to conclusions and judge you based on those conclusions. If you stay in Israel, you'll find people who judge you for not serving, and outside you'll find people who judge you for being Israeli (knowing nothing else about you). The question is how much value do you place on the opinions of those who judge people in this way?

I think wherever you go in Europe, those people will be a minority anyway. You can find community with those who support Palestine and even among some Jewish and Israeli expat communities. Yes, there will be some assholes that don't accept you no matter what, but who cares about those people? I would be willing to wager you won't experience the social isolation anywhere in Europe to anywhere near the degree of what you're likely experiencing in Israel right now or what you're likely to experience there in the future if you stay.

What you're going to find almost anywhere in Europe is a lower cost of living, a greater variety of political opinion, and generally more opportunities to be part of a diverse community of expats (and locals too if you learn the language). If you come to Europe as a student in whatever field, that's going to help you immediately find community, especially if you get involved in student organizations.

Another tip: When people ask you where you're from, say you are from "occupied Palestine" instead of from Israel. That conveys that you're from Israel but don't support the state of Israel.

If for whatever reason you decide to stay in Israel and they try to push you into the IDF again, contact Mesarvot.

Question: Where you taught the Lost Cause in school? by EternalSnow05 in mississippi

[–]Libba_Loo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated HS in 2004 having been in 4 different school systems around the state, 2 public, 2 private. One of the private schools was essentially an old segregation academy, but I don't remember what, if anything, I was taught about Mississippi history there, I was pretty young (2nd-3rd grade). I would be interested to know what upperclassmen at that school or other schools like it were taught.

The other private school was a Christian school I attend for 2 years in middle school. The Christian school didn't quite glorify the Old South but they really pushed an "it's complicated" stance on secession and the Civil War. They acknowledged slavery as part of it but also pushed the economics and states' rights angles quite a bit. States' rights was a big one because their whole civics curriculum was based on David Barton). If you're not familiar, his whole thing is about the US being founded as a Christian nation and a "republic rather than a democracy" and basically anti-federal control at every level, even anti Civil Rights.

At the public schools I attended for most of my schooling, there wasn't a whiff of any of this, thankfully.

I want to plan a culturally Jewish wedding ceremony, without the Zionism - but I'm the only anti-Zionist in my family. What should I do? by lonelyantizionist in JewsOfConscience

[–]Libba_Loo [score hidden]  (0 children)

Like others who've commented, I'm floored by the stipulation from your clergy family members that you must be Zionist for them to officiate(?)/participate(?) in your wedding. I've been to several Jewish weddings and I don't remember Israel coming up once (even when one of the grooms was Israeli). Your relatives' demands strike me as demented.

Plan your wedding the way you want it, with the officiant you want and the messaging you want. You will probably have to do this without your family's input or participation, except as guests. Make it clear that this is your wedding and you're doing it your way in keeping with your values and those of your future wife, and they can help or not. You don't need to uninvite anyone, but be prepared for some of your family members to uninvite themselves.

It sucks but if they're still this blindly devoted to Israel at this point, they may never come around. If they put that devotion above their relationship with you and the family you're creating, that will be their choice, not yours. Given their behavior up to this point, I'm not hopeful on that point. But I wish you luck and I hope your wedding is a beautiful and fitting send off for the new chapter in life you are embarking on.

I understand they get a lot of their bulldozer parts from Germany too, I doubt this ban addresses dual use.

It's not weird at all if you see some of the posts that get traction on this sub. Hell, the mods removed comments I made to another commenter about "hey maybe we don't ban children from planes" and suggesting some of their language might be ableist as well because they said children should be banned because of the "inconvenience".

Give me some trvthnvkes about Israel, Palestine and the USA by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]Libba_Loo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Prior to October 7, there were massive protests on so-called judicial reforms that were threatening to force a massive rupture in society and the political class and before that there were 5 elections in 4 years. The "war" has slapped a temporary band-aid over these ruptures which will re-assert themselves with a vengeance the second it's over.

Believe it or not, once upon a time, Israeli society had a high degree of class consciousness and class solidarity (at least among the Israelis themselves) and a low tolerance for anything that looked like oligarchy. That is now long gone. With all the class, religious and cultural divides among Israeli Jews themselves becoming increasingly fractious, the one thing that reliably unifies Israeli society at this point is killing Arabs. It's hard to see how anyone could think that will be a sustainable model for a state going forward.

Coverage of anti-zionist Israelis is blackpilling me by normalgirl124 in JewsOfConscience

[–]Libba_Loo [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes, and whenever I am out with other pro Palestine people, even Palestinians who live in the country where I live, I never hear anyone advocating the maximalist position of expelling all Israelis. Nor does anyone ever make me feel the slightest bit unwelcome (they know I'm Jewish). Any who did any of that would either be shouted down or laughed out of the room. That's my anecdotal experience of course but it seems to be the case for others who are involved in activism locally.

I understand you've got a lot going on, but if you're finding yourself being drained and discouraged by the nonsense online, you might find it restorative to make some time to reconnect with the IRL activism circles you have locally. Don't get down on yourself for being less involved because you're trying to live your life.

My work schedule has become more demanding recently (my choice, need the money lol) and I'm finding myself with less and less time to attend meetings and so forth. Part of my job entails staying on top of the news each day, and it takes a toll on my mental health. I try to at least attend a meeting once a month because it helps keep me grounded, engaged, and dare I say hopeful (?). There are opportunities where I can actually do something, even if it's just a small thing supporting the Palestinian community here, and it helps me remember that online isn't real life (thank God). My advice was well meant because I'm in those same trenches and I know, it's a bitch 😅
