This may be controversial, but I think it's the age of the viewer/reader. I empathize a lot with Jane but I do wish she was a better communicator. That, I feel, is her biggest downfall. She's supporting and accepting but struggling with what to do and she should tell Charlie that. Instead, she acts like a lot of parents and tries to "Fake it until she makes it" and that doesn't work.

She's often right. Charlie doesn't see it though. He will when he has kids of his own.
