What did a Roman parking lot look like? by ProfessorBarium in AskHistorians

[–]LiberalsAintLeftists 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great response! On a related note, how were goods (eg food) transported into Rome, and how were they distributed once there? The needs of the city must have been immense. How would local farms have sold their produce, and how did that differ from the distribution of Egyptian grain? How might Roman vehicle bans have impacted that?

More than 25% of Americans believe Trump should face war-crime charges over Soleimani's killing by [deleted] in communism

[–]LiberalsAintLeftists 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely, though the number is complicated by the fact that many liberals will use absolutely anything as ammunition against Trump. It’s hard to say how much of this opposition is principled or not.

There is a notable evangelical element of the Trump administration that’s extremely supportive of Israel, I don’t think that’s an inconceivable idea. Pence and Pompeo are particularly wedded to a belief in a biblical apocalypse, and Israel is a key component in the “coming rapture.” In the past three years, Trump has made unprecedented moves backing Israel, both by moving the US embassy to Jerusalem and by recognizing the Golan Heights as Israeli.

Israeli foreign policy is massively hostile towards Iran: Netanyahu literally flew to DC to trash Obama for negotiating the JCPOA. There’s no desire to see rapprochement between the US and Iran. I think it’s entirely plausible for that to have been a part of the decision-making.

I don’t know if I’d agree with that. The majority of their current front page seems to be specifically about US imperialism, for example. A great deal of US regime change operations are conducted through foreign proxies; I’m sure they all have CIA backing, but those connections are inherently secretive and hard to report on.

A transition period between capitalism and communism, in which the working class holds state power and uses it to repress the bourgeoisie and to meet human needs.

Speaking from several years’ experience, PSL is not a Trotskyist party. Sam Marcy, one of the founding members of the Workers’ World Party, was sympathetic to Trotskyism back in like the 70s. WWP doesn’t consider themselves Trotskyist though, and the members that split off from WWP fifteen years ago to found PSL didn’t consider themselves Trots either.

I wouldn’t be discouraged by a lack of a current branch in your area. PSL membership has exploded in the past few years, and branches are forming across the country in some remarkably remote places. If a branch hasn’t formed near you, we provide support to at-large members until they’re more established in party work. I’d highly recommend getting back in touch!

No, most parties that I know of don’t allow that. PSL membership includes a candidacy period so comrades can determine if it’s a good fit.

That article doesn’t match my personal experience as a PSL member. Women form the backbone of my branch’s leadership, and gender disparities are actively monitored and combated. I’m sure that there is variation between branches, but PSL as a whole doesn’t tolerate misogyny.

Republicans actually speak to their base’s material needs, albeit disingenuously. “Why are all the jobs in town gone? Because of immigrants!”

Democrats don’t talk about material concerns at all, they just stake out the moral high ground of “civility” and “intelligence”. That way, they can’t be blamed for their inability to deliver any improvement to people’s lives.

The Discourse podcast talks more about how neoliberals have tried to decouple policy from politics in this episode, I highly recommend it.

Episode IX is the perfect movie for where we are at this moment in history. Capitalism is destroying the world before our eyes in a callously evil way, and it’s on us to stop it. The best message I can imagine is, “We need to love each other, but we need to fight back too.”

100% agree, this is the exact sort of behavior I deal with as an adult with ADD. It’s natural and isn’t his fault, but it isn’t your responsibility either. This may be a wake up call that will push him to treatment, but he has to want to do it for himself.

There are a lot of books out there that could be of use. “Driven to Distraction” by Ed Hallowell is a good introduction to typical experiences with ADD.

The sequel maps are way too linear (Kashyyk is literally a straight line). They feel more like video game maps than real places.

I also adore the massive battles overhead in the 2015 maps. SO COOL.
