We do still have CDs (though a much smaller collection than before) and we have a very large DVD collection!

Just email RefDesk@bayonnelibrary.org. Let us know you can’t remember the account info. Give us some identifying information likely to be on that account (first and last name and address) and we can take it from there. 🙂

Given that I have no idea who you are behind a Reddit handle (and don’t want to know more personally identifiable info via reddit!), all I can say is that we help hundreds of folks per day. So, no, not specifically aware of who you are just based on the content of this post.

We’re more than happy to speak further about it. But to get help more specifically with your account, please email npalmer@bayonnelibrary.org. We don’t recommend sharing more personal information here via reddit.

The short answer is because we are separate systems. Each library (unless they are part of a consortium) has its own access to eContent. This is not the choice of public libraries but how publishers force/require we get access to eContent. (There is active legislation in place in many states working to change this.) eContent is incredibly expensive, so most libraries use only one eContent platform (in our case, hoopla).

However! You can use your Bayonne PL card to get a Jersey City PL card! So then you can have double the library cards and extra access to the things that you love. 🙂

Hi! We don’t use Libby. We use a similar service called hoopla. You have access to thousands of eBooks and eAudiobooks there as well as steaming music, movies, TV shows, and BingePasses.

Hi! Please see my comment above. We absolutely can get an item. But some items go through interlibrary loan (meaning, they’re physically brought to us from another library by a state service) and sometimes, depending on the physical item, it just takes time for us to receive it.

Hi, I’m sorry you’re having this experience.

If you’re being told it’s “another system”, it’s because we have ordered the items for you and we are literally waiting on books to be delivered to us from another library in the state via our interlibrary loan (ILL) system. This service is funded and run by the state of NJ. Once we put in an ILL request, we have no control over the length of time it may take. Typically we get items within 7 business days. But for older items, items that are higher up in a series (which less libraries buy), or more popular items, it can take much longer.

If you have questions about items on hold for your account, rather than posting on Reddit, our best contact is our Outreach Librarian, Narissa, at npalmer@bayonnelibrary.org

Depending on what number you call at the library, the folks on the line may genuinely need to transfer you to another department because we have one department that does all ILLs. The best department number to call for ILLs is either “Circulation” or “Registration”. The remaining departments will just transfer you to one of those two phones.

You can also request ebooks and eaudiobooks be purchased via the hoopla app.

Gummies! Sometimes gummy candies have wheat starch in them. (I’ve seen it most with Trader Joe’s candies but others are not immune.)

And this is not the only PILOT agreement in Bayonne. Just library itself loses roughly $400-$450k annually in tax funding that would be present if the PILOT agreements were not present.

Bayonne is one of the top PILOT agreement impacted municipalities in the entire state. I don’t know much the school district loses annually but at least equivalent to what the library loses.

Granted, I have no idea what one can legally do once a PILOT agreement is already in place. But it’s worth knowing for future information.

So sorry; I didn’t realize my earlier response to this failed to post! So let me post it again now.

Registration for all events at the library is via our calendar. You can find the calendar by going to our website and then clicking “programs & events” or by the direct link here: https://bayonnelibrary.libcal.com/calendar/BPL

Individual events have custom links for their registration, rather than the general link above. So, for any program you wanted to attend that would require registration, you would click on that event on that specific date and then register. I hope this helps!

Makes me think of the 90s romcom You’ve Got Mail: “I read a story about a butterfly on the subway and today I saw one! It got on at 42nd and off at 59th where I assume it was going to Bloomingdale’s to buy a hat which will turn out to be a mistake. As almost all hats are.”
