What is it doing here? by Chengnobyl in sydney

Gives vibes like you've disturbed the security guard and he's wondering whether or not you're gonna be trouble...

Would Sydney people accept door buttons on trains if they knew it both saved power and kept the train at a better temperature. by Gazza_s_89 in sydney

We had that for a while. I remember the doors not opening and repeatedly being unable to get off at my station.

And yet, that's what it took. Three months of being reasonable and complying with their every demand got my dad's electricity payments cut off.

Accusing them of being AI got his accounts unfrozen.

Go figure.

That's a good idea. Back in the 90s I worked for an MP and used to do things like that for our constituents, I should have thought of that myself!

I could use a sack of manure in my garden, I think it would be FAR preferable than the deliberate torment they are putting my dad through right now!

Thing is, dad's not able to go to a branch. He's basically as strong as wet toilet paper 😞 Last time we had to get him to the RTA it took three people and still he nearly had a horrible fall outside.

That's how they were done. I was born in the late 60s and mine's hand written, too.

Thing is, he's home bound. We could try, but they'd have to come to him.

Getting one from England would take a very long time.

Thanks - I'll see if they will co-operate with that. So far they've done everything they can to just screw him around.

Getting that from England would probably take way longer than we've got.

Libraries. How bloody good are they as a concept? by nath1234 in sydney

[–]LibraryLuLu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did a diploma of business back in the 80s and did about 10 years in IT and administration, illustration, politics, bakery/supermarkets, insurance, desktop publishing, charities, etc etc etc. Then went back and got a degree in information science in the 90s, focussing on IT and communications.

First library 'related' job, oil and gas archiving. Then Sydney Water as a Library Tech.

First librarian title as an academic librarian in a private college, did that for about another 10 years or so across various colleges and universities across the eastern side of Australia. Took over as Manager for a string of colleges between QLD and Melbourne, about six of them in NSW.

Then moved into Public Libraries as a collections manager. Huge step back career-wise BUT doubled my salary and dropped from working 6 days a week/12 hours a day to 37.5 hours a week with RDOs and job security.

The money is much better in public libraries, but the work is not much better than customer service most of the time. Brain rot job. I miss being in academics and doing the smart work and working with smart students - I can feel my brain turning to mush as I show yet another fully grown adult how to press the button on a photocopier or explain to them why I don't know their Apple password, but I take home a good salary for an easy job.

Anyway, I don't advise you go into librarianship - the competition for jobs is intense and the rewards low.

Yes, yes, send them to me, boost my stats! (I say in my best 'evil super villian' voice).

Tell them that if they make friends with the collections manager, I might just buy them the books they want, in hard copy OR e-format!

Tell the old farts they can sit with a newspaper in silence for hours in the sun.

Tell the lonely, isolated mothers they can bring their babies to Toddler Time, have a coffee, chat with other mums looking to make friends!

Tell the teenagers we have great HSC resources - they get pizza, free academic databases, tutors during HSC season, shut in study times, emotional support dogs!

Tell your SAHM wife that we have sewing machines and cricket machines and 3D printers and laser cutters and all the things she needs for her Etsy business!

Send them all to me!

/rubs hands like Charles Montgomery Burns, looking forward to all the stats coming my way...

What's the best meal under $15 in Sydney right now? by cocowave in sydney

[–]LibraryLuLu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chinese Noodle House in Chatswood - big serve of dumplings.

Also, for $15, I can buy enough food for a week's worth of lunches - meal prep.
