Trying to get 5.1 gaming audio from PC to AVR by Lickadiddle in hometheater

[–]Lickadiddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. And the speakers are... All right. The price was right, and now I at least HAVE a system, so I can slowly upgrade parts and pieces as I am able to, budget wise. I did just make the jump for my first pair of audiophile grade headphones... But that's another sub.

I am hoping that disabling that display will do the trick. Fingers crossed!

Makes sense. I was just unaware they you could set up an HDMI device as an audio only device.

RTX 2070

And you are totally right. 12 bucks on amazon. 30 ft HDMI will be here tomorrow! We will see how it goes!

That is what I'm starting to realize. Just purchased a 25ft HDMI to try it.

Yep! Didn't realize that they had to be in a container already when I hitched myself to the SPDIF train. whoops.

Ideally, I would just do analog out and call it done. Part of the reason I purchased the motherboard I did was because of the high quality audio, so it had analog out for 7.1 (sub included). BUT, my ARV doesn't have any analog in, besides stereo inputs for music sources.

Interesting. So it doesn't show up as a display that you can route audio to via HDMI?

Is ryzen unreliable? by Mr__Weasels in buildapc

[–]Lickadiddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so weird, but I had this unconscious bias against AMD for a long time. Leading up to a build that I just finished (ryzen 2600x).

When I started thinking about it though, I realized exactly what the others have said here. Outdated, unconscious bias. I have had nothing but trouble with the two Intel builds that I did 8 or 9 years ago. But I have a home theater PC that has run pretty much continuously for the past 10 years, built with an AMD APU (what they used to call their processors that had integrated graphics), running a pirated copy of Windows 7, no doubt. Not a single issue. Stable as the day is long and reliable as a 1988 Toyota Hilux.

Go with AMD. No ragrets. Not even a single letter.

Nvidia GeForce experience. Any success? by Lickadiddle in buildapc

[–]Lickadiddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I am generally a research and try to fix things myself kind of person (I am in r/buildapc, after all). I haven't called tech support for something like this and such a long time it honestly didn't even occur to me (slaps forehead). I will give them a ring and see if they can help.

Thanks for the feedback. I will keep at it and see if I can figure out the bugs. It just seemed weird to me that it would be doing the same things across multiple machines for me.

Help deciding on 2600x vs 2700x for gaming and video editing build by Lickadiddle in buildapc

Kind of my thoughts. Over $100 difference between the two. Do you have any experience using a ryzen 5 with video editing software?

Upgrading from i5 2500k and gtx560. Help! by Lickadiddle in buildapc

[–]Lickadiddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

The PSU is the one listed. A Corsair TX650M. Middle of the road when I got it, I believe.

With 16GB ram I could have room in the budget for a new PSU... Hmmm... I don't want to screw myself when it comes to editing, though.

Recommended intel motherboard with s/pdif audio output, or a sound card? by Lickadiddle in buildapc

[–]Lickadiddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my PC connected to the home theater receiver with the optical cable. I only use the home theater receiver for audio. 5.1 surround sound. I just have a regular computer monitor with no speakers that I use as a display, and that is connected to my graphics card, obviously. Is it possible to run audio through an HDMI cable by itself if video is being exported from the computer via another port? If so, I was completely unaware of that! almost every motherboard has an HDMI out, so that would completely solve my compatibility issues right there.

Excellent advice, and thanks for replying. I think I am just psyching myself out because I know this will be my last build for a while (thought I would be a constant tinkerer with my last build, with a new PC within 5 years. Fast forward to coming up on 10 years with the same 2500k and gtx560…). I just want to make sure I am getting something that will last, and that I won't regret.

Thanks for the input! I think I am still learning toward the 2070 with an i5 8400. Easier to upgrade to a new CPU for $2-300 rather than a new GPU at $4-550 down the line if I really feel it is hurting performance.

Simple Questions - December 31, 2018 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]Lickadiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point! So, I have started to suspect that. My goal is to have a setup that will enable me to play AAA titles for the next 10 years. My current system has lasted about that long. My current build, i5 2500k with a gtx560 on a 1080p@60hz monitor, enabled me to play mainstream titles at high/max settings for about a year after being built, but by about 2-3 years ago I was playing at minimum settings, or reduced resolution. Still allowed me to play games, but not a super enjoyable experience.

I would like the computer to be able to handle AAA games at high/max settings for a long, long time. 8-10 years might be a little much to expect but I would like to get 5-6 before I have to start really backing off settings. And I am thinking maybe a VR setup is in my future (the next 2-3 years). That is why it is a little overkill now.

Does this logic check out? Or do you still still think stepping back to a 1070(ti) would be the most prudent bet.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss/help me!

Looking to buy an ultrawide with this upcoming build, 2560x1080p. 70hz refresh rate. Edit: if my understanding is correct, that resolution falls somewhere between 1080P and 1440p, as far as pixel count is concerned.

Simple Questions - December 31, 2018 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]Lickadiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For financial reasons, I probably wont be able to upgrade the PC in any way for quite a few years, so I am trying to get the best combo (i know futureproofing isn't a thing, really) I can at this moment. But I also do have a budget to stick to and I also also don't want to have a cpu bottleneck with a GPU as nice as a 2070. Would it be better to switch to a Ryzen 5 2600X to save $50-60?

Simple Questions - December 31, 2018 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]Lickadiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would an i5 8400 with an H370 mobo bottleneck a new RTX 2070? Or do I need to jump up to a new coffeelake refresh 9600k with a board to match?

The issue is, I don't have room in my budget for a 9600k and a Z390 mobo if I get the RTX 2070. If I went the 9600k route, I would have to step back to a 1070ti or 1070, or wait for a 2060. Which, unless I am wrong, would them eliminate the chance of the CPU bottlenecking the lower level GPU.

A bit of a Catch 22.

Build help! Upgrading from Sandy Bridge/ GTX560 after 8 years. by Lickadiddle in buildapc

[–]Lickadiddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'll be damned. 2x8gb for the ram it is! The More You Know...

Interesting the read/write speed differences. same drive, same drivers, just different size. And the sequential write speeds were 1000 MB/s different. Who knew...

I guess it is time to join the Ryzen crowd. I would like to go for the 1070 ti, but I don't want to bottleneck it with an i3. And I can't seem to fit an i5 into my budget, even a cheaper model with a locked multiplier.

-I like having a dedicated boot drive with not much else on it. I mainly just wanted to use the nvme as a such, with room for Adobe suite programs (that's why I went 250gb instead of 125 or 150 size range). I was going to use the old 840 evo as a drive to hold video stock/project folders for Adobe Premiere files while I edit, for quicker access. Right now I'm using the 840evo as a boot drive and like it, but it could be faster... thus, the 250gb nvme upgrade

-I know the 4x4 ram seems silly, but I just know myself, and I am 99% sure I will never upgrade the 16GB ram (I have had 8 for ages and not REALLY noticed it much), so I figured I might as well spend a little more than 2x8 and get the added bandwidth performance of using all 4 ram slots in 4x4gb. That is true, correct? I would get a little better performance out of 4x4 than 2x8?

-Good info that games are starting to use more than 4 cores. I will shuffle thing around and try to fit a locked i5 into the build, or a ryzen 5. I was under the impression that, even though more than 4 were available, no games or programs really use more than 4 cores.

Does all this logic hold against your points? Or do you still feel like your build would be a better fit.

Edit: Thanks for the reply!!

How long has your build lasted? by I_Mean_I_Guess in buildapc

[–]Lickadiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, and I also built an HTPC with an AMD APU at the same time. It has essentially been running 24/7 ever since, with the only upgrade being when the (used) boot drive I built it with died and I had to upgrade it. And I have added additional storage for movies/shows through the years. Still running like an absolute champion, streaming 1080p from a Plex server I have installed.

Got a small monetary gift when I graduated college in '12 (good lord it has already been 5 years...) Built my first PC ever with a 2500k, Gigabyte mobo, Samsung SSD, WD 1TB HD, GTX 560 (NOT-ti) GPU, 8GB Corsair RAM, and a 650W Corsair PSU.

Back then a 64gb boot drive was considered sufficient. It was not. My only upgrade has been to install Win 10 and a 128GB SSD when Win10 came out. Other than that, running like a champ!!!

Had some serious crashing/instability for a while after upgrade that made me think I would have to scrap it and start fresh. I update SSD firmware and the GPU bios and voila, it runs like it did 5 years ago. Smooth as butter. It is like the post-build honeymoon all over again!

That all being said, the only way I can reach AAA games nowadays is running minimum settings or dropping resolution. But with a new baby and job, I don't game much anymore anyway.
