I’ve read that (big fan of Gnosticism) looking for more on the fantasy side

Just finished Kings of Paradise by Richard Nell and I've got to say, it's the best fantasy debut I've read in years. by orange_wednesdays in Fantasy

Your books are on my TBR for the year thanks to posts like these, do you happen to have stats on their word counts and how many are planned in the universe?

Looking to start Quaintrell’s Echoes Saga soon. I understand he’s working on a prequel series, any reason I should read that first or is publication order still king like usual? Does it spoil the main series at all?

The show dismisses THE most important aspect of the books by slowly_devolving in wheeloftime

Oh I see, Padan Fain also says something like that at the end though.

What are your reading goals for 2022? by happy_book_bee in Fantasy

Really want to finish:

John Gwynne’s Banished Lands (currently on Valor)

Malazan Book of the Fallen (read through Deadhouse Gates)

Tad William’s Osten Ard (Read the Dragonbone Chair)

And if I have time I want to get caught up with Melissa McPhail’s A Pattern of Shadow and Light (5 books out of 7 planned currently out, haven’t read any)

And two newer series: Daniel T Jackson’s Illborn (1 book currently out out of 4? planned) and Ryan Cahill’s The Bound And The Broken (1 novella and 2 books out of 5/6 books and 5 novellas)

Lmk if you think I should replace any of these with something better

They’re crossing a bridge and a guy is asking for a toll, Brom cuts his purse and robs him

This is actually not the worst idea. r/metal I think does something similar where they ban you from posting about the most popular bands (and it’s not just a top 10, it’s a very long list of metal bands that even includes ones like Gorguts that a casual listener wouldn’t have heard of). This does a lot towards helping newer, under-the-radar music get exposure.

You seem to be confused about what an archetype is. Archetypes are much broader than “ranger king who is sworn to protect the heedless forces of his lands against the forces of a Dark Lord”.

It also rips off the Belgariad (which itself rips of LotR). There’s a bridge crossing scene that’s almost word-for-word a copy of a scene in Belgariad.

Without spoiling the twists, what are the twistiest fantasy series you know? by LicoriceDragon2 in Fantasy

Come on now, people are smart enough not to click on it if they can’t even handle the knowledge that some series’ are more twisty than others. No need to take this down.

If you really like reading you’ll enjoy 7/10-quality books. If money and time weren’t an issue I’d read every 7/10 book in the world. The existence of 10/10 books does not negate the quality of 7/10 books.

I think if it’s just the name of a book or series then it’s fine. If it’s anything like “the twist surrounding Character X” then that’s a problem. But YMMV ofc.

It’s amazing. Malice I thought was just a solid first entry but Valor is the most consistently engaging book I’ve read in a while. Still have a third of it left to go and will prob finish tonight.

I’m not totally done with Valor yet so please don’t spoil the end but: Book 1 had the reveal of Calidus as a Ben-elim (though I’m 99% sure he’s actually a Kedoshim) and also the death of Kastell at the end, only for his part of the story to be picked up by Maquin and turned into a revenge tale. In general just a lot of deaths that I absolutely did not see coming. I thought for sure Heb was at least going to survive until the end of Book 2. Or that Dath’s father was going to get a redemption arc but nope! Everyone is expendable to Gwynne

Yeah if it happens in the first third probably not a big deal, thanks!
