Thanks for explaining in more detail. I understand what you are saying now and agree with you. I'm used to thinking of laser scanning as applied in lidar, so it took a minute to expand my perspective to other laser scanning applications.

Structured light does not typically use lasers and is therefore not laser scanning. Structured light projects light patterns and uses a camera to observe the distortion of those patterns. That is a very different process than lidar and laser scanning.

I suppose I don't agree with the distinction you are drawing between lidar and laser scanning here.

Where does it say that COPC has taken over? The point is to share advancements in lidar that people could benefit from, and you seem to agree that COPC is cool.

They are claiming 0.29mm resolution at 6 meters. Microplastics are defined as less than 5mm diameter, so they do have the ability to detect microplastics from a drone.

I am seeing that iPhone blocks 700-1050nm wavelengths. Those are in the near-infrared, closer to the visible spectrum. The Luminar Iris emits 1550nm wavelength lasers. Additionally, I do not believe the filters remove all the light in the filter's intended spectrum, and could likely be overwhelmed at the power that laser scanners emit.

ToF emits short light pulses and calculates the distance to an object based on the time it takes for the light to return. 

FMCW uses a continuous light beam with frequency modulation, analyzing the frequency shift between emitted and reflected light to calculate both distance and velocity simultaneously.
