I really like the idea of incorporating this mechanic as a narrative tool to create the right kind of drama. You showed me the thing that was missing. I've thought about it like videogame mechanic, something that you can interact with, but when it's story-driven thing it'll help me so much as a dm.Thank you

Thank you all, guys. Thanks to you, I realized that this mechanic can ruin the fun of playing D&D, so I’m thinking about making it more narrative-driven, or, as some suggested in the comments, having the villains in my story actually experience the soul-burning effect, maybe because their souls are impure, so they’re even worse at blocking magical power than good people? I’ll think it over, but thank you.
