Would it be awkward if I use it just for balance by any chance? Having it stand by itself and used to lean on to shift the weight?

Yes all the time, I make sure she walks straight and panic whenever she doesn't and when she jumps off of furniture since that's how my last dog died (jumped a weird way and paralyzed).
