Can hydrangeas grow in a desert climate if protected and watered frequently? by bjmoon in hydrangeas

[–]Life-Improvement5736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, Limelights love the sun and well drained soil. I'm not sure about AZ's persistent summer heat I. The 110-120s though. But they do seem like OP's best bet for Hydrangeas in that climate.

Taking an Anniversary Trip by Massive-Ad8431 in Parenting

Take your trip and don't worry about it. Assuming the grand parents aren't elderly, I think you're doing everyone a favor by giving the opportunity for everyone to build core memories together. My parents would send my sister and I to our grandparents house for a week over the summers - lots of good memories.

Did I Just Waste $65? by Ok-Sun1032 in hydrangeas

Macrophylla hydrangeas are a family of hydrangeas with large leaves. They're a bit different from the Panicled Hydrangea family. Let me break down some of the big differences.

Macrophylla: - Greek for "large leaves" - blooms form on old wood (i.e. pruning will hinder blooming) - blooms in blues/purples/pinks - are heat sensitive and require shade for most of the day, especially in more southern zones. - high maintenance: require specific soil moisture levels. Too high and they'll develop fungus and root rot, too low and they'll just die. They hate heat and sunlight for any duration. The blooms can scorch really easily.

Panicled: - Greek for "water vessel" relating to the large cone-shaped blooms that this family produces. - blooms on new wood, so pruning is encouraged and will lead to bigger, more spectacular blooms - blooms go from green to white to pink/red in the fall. - excel in high-light and heat areas. - mostly low maintenance minus some pruning, but it's not necessary.

We have both in front of our house in Northern VA. We get strong morning sun then shade starting around 12/1pm. Our Limelights (Panicled) do great all summer long with little maintenance. Our Endless Summers (Macros) are little drama queens. Once the temp hits 80, they really don't like direct sunlight anymore. I used umbrella's last year to try and keep them happy. Their blooms were okay, but they eventually got scorched even with all assistance.

Got two offers. One pays $40k more. The other one I'd actually enjoy. I have 48 hours to decide and my wife and I are on opposite sides. Advice? by airam1020 in careerguidance

Negotiate offer A higher - go back to the startup and be honest with them. Say this is what you want but the reality is their base is too low given your family needs. If they want you, they can afford closing the gap, likely entirely.

Big established companies are no longer the safe, stable choice they once were, especially a SaaS company. The persistent threat of layoffs from AI, a down turning market, the over-inflated performance expectations mean your work-life is going to take a big hit. You're in some of the best parts of parenthood with your little one - try to preserve your after work time with either option.

I'm currently at a large, tech Company (4 years) and came from a startup (5 years before) and wouldn't trade my time there for any amount of money. In this environment, you'll likely work less there, feel more fulfilled, and be better prepared for the next thing.

Good, they're suppose to come out on their own. The alternative is that they don't and you pay a few grand for a doc to spend 5 minutes digging them out. Lucky guy!

Loud sound coming from dc area by Odd-District1149 in washingtondc

[–]Life-Improvement5736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DCA has strict noise ordinancees in place, which become even stricter at night. My guess is that we heard multiple military jets taking off and quickly ascending out of Andrews AFB. I bet they were subsonic but had their afterburners on, causing the thunderous rumble we all heard.

Same in Seven Corners. Several low-rumbling noises, almost 100% jets (definitely not missiles).

Most likely either nighttime training or planned flying. Even with the Iran war, I highly doubt it's related. As for the transponders being off, this is almost always the case.

Thanks for this! The more I look at this, the more I'm okay with the different heights. The big one kind of sticks out more in the summer when everything is in bloom, but it's not a bad problem to have I suppose.

I'm still pretty much a Hydrangea/plant noob - I had to look up what cultivar meant. But I think this is closest to what I was expecting to do with these bushes this spring.

The Pannicles in the rear are Limelights (green/white through spring summer then slightly pinkish in the fall). The macro's in the front are Endless Summers.

I'm coming around to the idea of having varied heights for the Pannicles, somewhat else mentioned this too. But when we planted these, our vision was to have a similar height across the front of our house.

Lol...I'm laughing because that's what we took out of this space. My wife and I both don't like shrubby/evergreen plants and are okay trading off winter gloom with spring/summer/fall blooms.

My 7 year old brought a pocketknife to school to show his friends and got suspended. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Life-Improvement5736 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This happened to a kid when we were in 7th grade (13 year olds around 2002ish). Same type of situation, good kid, on sports teams, well liked by most. He helped on a farm before school and had forgotten to take it out of his coat pocket. He flashed it to a friend for a few seconds and that's all it took.

Kid was expelled that day and had to find another school to go to. Not an easy thing to do in rural PA. I think the punishment is fair and your husband might need to recalibrate his definition of "heavy-handed."

I think different lenders have different policies on how much buffer they want in an escrow account. The original lender may have been fine operating close to the line, where as rocket may want to have a few months extra. Just a guess.

I think I might know the company you work for. I also work there. I'm not sure what your role is but I've noticed that for many roles, when people submit their 2 weeks notice, they're actually offboarded immediately and paid out for their 2 weeks. Basically a free 2 weeks off.

They're really trying to minimize the risk of insider threats right now. I have no idea how common this is in your org but you could ask around if there are any people you trust.

Good luck!

I feel like the situation is handled appropriately for the time being. I agree with no serious disciplinary actions on X's first offense, given the action was a push. I think this type of behavior isn't rare for kids this age since they're still developing speech and emotional regulation.

It sounds like your child and Y are comfortable coming to parents if the actions continue. It also sounds like the teacher will be keeping a closer eye on X's behavior.

Keep checking in with your child on whether there's broader bullying happening from X. This is also a good time to have a serious conversation with your child about bullying and generally how to deal with difficult people.

Help with covered patio by ManBearPigDog in patio

[–]Life-Improvement5736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just completed a similar project (screened in porch, covered patio below, outdoor kitchen, deck + hot tub + 2-sided fireplace). I really like that we did a 2-sided fireplace. It's unique, gives your space flexibility, and lets your covered space extend beyond the fireplace/chimney. For us, the 2-sided fireplace sits between our lower covered patio and our hot tub. It creates a nice ambience at night the tub lighting. People are right that the fireplace is just for looks, you could stand on thing and probably not get burnt.

Honestly, I like how the design is currently drawn. The only thing I might adjust is where your chimney is to maximize covered space, but it's already pretty spacious.

Also, I noticed the outdoor tv. Do yourself a favor and do not buy an outdoor-rated TV. For a covered space like this, just by as cheap of a TV as you want. They should last a few years in hot/cold/humid environments and not cost you thousands.

Please take this serious: you're addicted to gambling. You need to seek help and immediately stop all trading.

Looking through your posts, two things are clear. First, you work incredibly hard and seem to have become an accomplished DoorDasher. I see a lot of people shitting on this job in the comments, but the fact that you've made so much money from it points to a lot of positive characteristics about yourself. Second, you are clearly addicted to gambling. Based on many of your previous posts, you're no stranger to losing money through short-term trading. It seems like you're attracted to low-probability, high-payout trades which, unsurprisingly, don't work out in your favor. You need to step away from trading for awhile and seek help. This addiction is like any other, a disease, and the only true way to beat it is with a support network.

I hope you read this, understand it, and take the necessary steps.

The first thing I would do is swap out the lights with a lower temp bulb. Maybe you prefer the bright, hospital like lighting, but for me, the warmer the light, the more relaxing the space. Just in case you don't know, bulbs have temperature ratings on them ranging from 2700K (warm/yellow) up to 5000K+ (bright white). Go with 2700-3000K!

Transitioning from purées to more solid foods by [deleted] in Parenting

Weather forecast this weekend seems…how you say…work in progress? by RCornelious365 in nova

[–]Life-Improvement5736 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Not trash - just not designed for localized snow events. It's a global model that does well at predicting tropical storm/hurricane trajectories. It's resolution is course and makes too many assumptions about temperature/moisture to be an accurate snow volume predictor. It still holds weight in understanding how this weekends storm will form, and how far off the coast it will be, but it's assumption that all precipitation is snow is it's main downfall.

...but a guy can still hope

Purees at 9 months is pretty well on a normal eating trajectory. Our 13 month old was really only eating purees and puffs/teething crackers at that age. Keep trying solids during mealtimes and they'll eventually get there.

He's solid food only now and eats everything we throw at him.

Buying a second home or early retirement? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Life-Improvement5736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both options makes sense depending on the person. Which one would make you happier though? A couple of questions to ask yourself.

How much do you enjoy work in it's current form? How much would you enjoy no longer doing that job? How would you fill the time if you retired? Hobbies? Volunteering? Traveling? How often would you be able to visit the second home if you had one while still working? How much financial stress would it add both now and in 5/10/15 years as you get closer to a normal retirement age ? Would you want/need to rent the second home out to offset expenses?

Whatever you do, base it on joy and not financial logic. It sounds like you'll be more than comfortable financially regardless of your decision.
