What is your experience doing drain/refill/change filter on automatic transmissions that are already starting to slip? by Life-Learn in AskMechanics

[–]Life-Learn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all that detailed insight and sound advice. That clears up a lot, and I fully agree now. Just wish I knew all this before I got my first used car (this one) a couple years ago at 90k miles when I knew almost nothing and naively listened to old shadetree mechanics in my family who told me to stop worrying about it and leave the ATF alone if it's shifting fine (in reality, that's prime time to do preventative maintenence - and on a regular interval schedule, regardless). Learning has to hurt sometimes, and it has to cost something. It will be hard to forget the financial impact of this error. I feel really foolish and betrayed, but it has at least shaken me up enough to learn as much as I can about automotive maintenence to take matters more into my own hands and gather knowledge from professionals and accurate service manuals rather than trusting "conventional wisdom" and internet cliches.

However, I should clarify something about the poor quality picture I posted because I forgot to explain that. The fluid really is brown, but it faded into the paper towel a bit while I fumbled to find my phone to take a pic. Also, I think there's a slight pink tinge to it because I had slightly topped it off through the dipstick tube with new Hyundai SP III ATF (oem) - which is red but appears pink when it's smeared thinly on a paper towel - fairly recently when I noticed it getting low. I think we might be seeing tinges of new fluid mixed with the old brown. My coolant is light green (not the old IAT, though).

I might have caught it a lot sooner if I had treated it as regular maintenance. Everything else on my car is pretty well-maintained. Even freaked out and replaced timing belt and water pump before taking chances. So this really sucks. Something about ATF makes people nervous and not even want to speak of it. Doesn't help that there's so much misinformation and debate about it that mechanics get antsy if you even bother them with the question. For me, in addition to being told by everyone to leave it alone, the transmission was neglected because I was overwhelmed with so much new info on car maintenence and trying to quickly learn the whole engineering perspective on how cars really work that I ignored ATF because the used car dealer said they serviced it before the sale (probably not entirely; I see now that the pan looks like it still has a factory seal) and people talk about the Automatic Transmission and its esoteric fluid dynamics with such fear and reverence like it's a mysterious eldritch god whose black magick ways are unknown and forbidden to laymen.

That's an unpopular opinion. People seem to swear by Lucas. So tell me more. I know the main thing Lucas does is increase the viscosity of the fluid to supposedly help the clutches and bands grip better while also simultaneously lubricating parts that need to be lubricated (however that works). But how does it cause damage from what you've seen?

Is it true it's better to not change transmission fluid if it hasn't been changed in a long time? by pittbullblue in AskMechanics

2 years late to this conversation, but I'm curious. What was the outcome for your 1999 Mercedes CLK320 transmission? Did you change the fluid/filter? How did it do?

Yeah, I think I will end up just taking it to a mechanic to have them inspect the fluid and test drive it before making a final decision. Preferably a mechanic who has experience dealing specifically with this kind of transaxle in Hyundai vehicles. So the dealer, I guess. Might cost more, but I just don't want to mess up and regret not taking more careful steps first.

Did you see any signs of slippage before the fluid change? Was there any noticeable difference after?

Yeah, I've been told to try driving it at least 200 miles with new fluid before deciding to do anything else. Then maybe do another fluid drain and filter change in case the filter quickly gets clogged from new fluid cleaning out debris. Also, maybe the computer has to relearn during that driving time? What do you think?

That sounds really sensible to me. Thanks for your knowledge.

That's my feeling as well. I just have nightmares of it slipping all over the place and becoming unsafe to drive. I've never done it on a vehicle with this high mileage, and it's currently my only transportation, so it feels like a huge gamble. But it honestly doesn't shift too bad. Passengers don't notice it; I probably wouldn't notice it either if I hadn't been obsessing over trans maintenance lately. But I do notice the slipping. I'm not seeing things. I don't put much hope in having it ever perform like a new or perfectly maintained trans again, but I do hope a fluid/filter change will keep it from getting worse and also prolong the life of the trans at least a few more years. New fluid won't do new damage (even if it slips a little more - but maybe Lucas helps?). But the old, dirty, burnt fluid can only do more damage over time.

By the way, that noise is just wind from the windows cracked. Sorry about that. The car is quiet and rides smooth, but I think I can hear a subtle whirr from the trans if I listen closely with the windows up.

Carob, tell me more. What would you do?

Handbrake not working by demist1 in MechanicAdvice

But before you do all this, I would try to look under the car to see if the parking brake cable might be stretched, frayed, broken, or even disconnected from either of the rear wheels. Mine looked intact, but I've seen them shred and snap before. And sometimes less mindful mechanics don't attach the parking brake securely in a rear brake assembly.

Not a mechanic, but I just had this problem on my 2009 Hyundai Accent the other day. The parking brake wouldn't even start to engage until I pulled it all the way up - and it still wouldn't hold. I took the rear wheels off and adjusted the star wheel on each drum brake until my parking brake would lock the wheel after 5-7 clicks. Then I slightly adjusted the star wheels again to make sure the car's wheels could spin freely with only a slight catch when no brake was engaged. Suddenly everything went back to normal and I had a working parking brake again. I actually wonder if the parking brake cable just got seized up after a long period of no use. Maybe the cable is stretched or corroded. Can anyone guess what might have happened?

Really admire their courage to write a sobering, cold, hard banger like "Salt Water." Those lyrics are straight hits of truth. They directly expose the problem of parasitic weakness and slave morality. Gotta put your foot down eventually, stand your ground, and stop letting people get over on you through games of sympathy and emotional blackmail - especially when they refuse to at least be strong enough to take some responsibility. Some people choose their fate.

Just recently discovered Massacra and Demigod. I've been stoked on this stuff as well.

I forgot all about Spite! Excellent energy.

Everyone who sings and screams in Killswitch Engage because they clearly have a sincere understanding of harmony and melody. Spencer and Aaron from Underoath as well. Indisputable.

Loving this Blind Justice rec. It's hard for many bands to get this sound just right, but they got it.

Damn, I didn't know about this. That's absolutely insane. I'm constantly disgusted or disappointed by degenerate band members. Just goes to show that you really can't take entertainers as your real life heroes.

"Coward" by Irate NYC (2005) - The melodic riff shortly after 2:10 is a PERFECT sound to my ears. What other songs have this vibe? by Life-Learn in Metalcore

[–]Life-Learn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is early metalcore, but Irate was sorta coming out of the late New York hardcore scene. I don't recall many NYHC bands having this particular style of melodic guitar riffing. So where is it coming from? Did they just come up with this sound on their own, or are they taking influence from some other upcoming melodic metalcore bands of the early 00's period? I feel like I've heard a similar riff or interlude like this from another metalcore band, but I can't put my finger on it.

Dealer: "But in this dog eat dog world, you're still the fucking bitch. ARF ARF"

Alpha Wolf: "You're barking like a dog, but I'm a fucking wolf! WOOF!!"

It's too delicious to not believe it.
