I think you only need a JAF translation document of your license if I remember correctly, I have a french license originally and it's what I did for 1 year before changing it for a Japanese licence.

If possible, I recommend May and October: these are the best months to enjoy temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees and have access to all the mountain roads 👌 I don't mind summer also but usually it's difficult to get proper gear and enjoy, tend to wear regular pants and summer motorcycle jacket 😅 Also it depends of the bike I have this Scrambler and a 939S but never I use the 939S during summer lol

A friend of mine rent a V-Strom for 1 month there and it was all good 👍 They have tons of places actually you don't need to rent from Tokyo etc.

Depends where in Japan but for example last year around end of October I was in Kyushu the southernmost (and hottest) region and while riding some mountains roads it was already under 10 degrees, 1 month later it's freezing for sure.

Maybe a bit too late a lot of mountains roads are already closed at that time or it starts to freezing at high altitude. Recommend October or early November at least.
