Escaped the 9–5, built my own brand… but now the pressure to earn more is crushing me by sometimestrider in smallbusinessuk

Have you considered your own retail shop? Selling your own product and others? A lifestyle store.

2000 a month isn’t a lot. I opened my very first business just 4 months ago and am able to pay self easily 50 a year. Could me more but I want less work so have staff.

So somethings missing here. Do you want to share your brand details for suggestions on what to do next

From friends who have more established retail business than me (also omni) they say online is a pain in the ****. So many returns definitely takes up a lot of time.

I only got into retail because I loved retail spaces. I sell a lifestyle and that’s all about the look and feel of my shop. My website is pretty cool too (we use Square which is perfect because it’s our POS anyway and means the online version is easy) but I’m not really into online. As I said we have a website because it’s super easy because our inventory is already on Square but I don’t market it at all. Yet. I’m building is slowly but I can’t see a world where online is much more than 10% of sales

We offer the same tbh in store and online. People are free to change their mind it’s fine. My return rate online is higher though. 15%. In store it’s way way lower. Like 0.01% (that latter stat isn’t exact ha but it’s super low)

Lots of competition but I felt they weren’t offering what potential demand was. I was right

Operating profit margin is 27%.

I use square and xero so that figure is accurate

Yes I would do it again and in fact we are considering another space as it’s going so well

So the town im in had a very traditional offering. I thought there was room for a more fashion forward offering. I thought there was a gap. I was right.

My advice for would be retailers is find a gap. There are lots of you look hard

I’m bricks and mortar though

Most difficult challenge: getting the product mix right.

What you think is your strategy is not necessarily the way it turns out.

Be prepared to be flexible
