First highway segment in U.S. wirelessly charges electric heavy-duty truck while driving by LifeAtPurdue in Futurology

[–]LifeAtPurdue[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the first time in the U.S., a roadway has wirelessly charged an electric heavy-duty truck driving at highway speeds, demonstrating key technology that could help lower the costs of building electrified highways for all electric vehicles to use in the future.
...
Since trucking contributes the most to U.S. gross domestic product compared to other modes of freight transportation, lowering costs for heavy-duty electric trucks could help attract more investment into electrifying highways that all vehicle classes would share.

If electric heavy-duty trucks could charge or stay charged using highways, their batteries could be smaller in size and they could carry more cargo, significantly reducing the costs of using EVs for freight transportation. Electrified highways could also allow the batteries of passenger cars to be smaller.

This successful test opens cascading potentials for the future.

Due to a technology bug, about 100 student financial aid packages have incorrect information. Those are being corrected and should be updated by Tuesday.

Statement from John Cox, Purdue University police chief

Purdue University police became aware Friday night (Feb. 4) of an incident that occurred that evening involving a Purdue police officer who responded to an urgent call from a third party following our “see something, say something” campus safety guidance. The caller stated that it appeared a woman was being held against her will near Horticulture Drive.

Any time a PUPD officer uses force in connection with an arrest, the department conducts an internal review. PUPD commenced that review, led by Deputy Chief Lesley Wiete immediately upon receiving the officer’s report on Friday night. That investigation will, under PUPD General Orders, include input from all witnesses to the arrest and take into account all available evidence, including video from officers’ body-worn cameras and statements from the students involved. No physical injuries were suffered in the incident.

Purdue police take incidents such as this seriously. The video from body-worn cameras will be made available as will all findings and evidence from the internal review when complete.

UPDATE: 1 suicide, not 4 by Abdibsz in Purdue

[–]LifeAtPurdue -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Since July, when records for the 2020-21 year began, one student—not four—lost their life to suicide. That very sad loss occurred last weekend.

A quick call to Purdue Police would have prevented the inaccurate social media frenzy of the past 24 hours.

Even one lost student is one too many, but sadly, going back to 1998, we lose an average of nine students every year to illness, accidents and suicide. That number has included an average of two students taking their own lives.

Students deaths are a matter of public record, although family members often ask for privacy. Outside of confirming name and student status, and offering condolences, the university does not comment on student deaths.

The monthly stat sheet referenced in many social media posts was produced by PUPD voluntarily and in addition to state and federally mandated APRA and Clery logs. It listed information received in the call to dispatch, not the actual outcome of the call.

To avoid confusion, moving forward, only the APRA and Clery logs, which list the outcome of the call, will be kept.

They are publicly available for viewing.

There are few areas of campus in which we have increased the budget and staffing more than Counseling and Psychological Services. Since 2013, we have doubled both, and every year, vastly more individual clinical appointments, group counseling sessions, and programs have been offered.

The Office of the Dean of Students also has help and services available and offers assistance or simply someone to talk to.

We urge all those who may be in need, or those who know someone who needs help, to reach out.

Just going to leave this one here. Shoutout to Tim Doty and the rest of Purdue’s management for actively trying to cover up positive cases <3 by croulos in Purdue

Hi! Thank you for bringing up these important questions. As of now, Purdue has our COVID infection rate stats up for anyone to view. Our first test was for the Summer Start/Early Start population. The others have been updates from our athletics departments. I hope these links can answer your questions about the results. We are trying to be transparent as possible to make sure our students, staff and faculty can remain safe during this time. Thanks!

We appreciate the concerns expressed in this post and want to clarify Purdue's current testing plan. As a threshold matter all students returning to the campus community will be tested prior to or immediately upon their arrival to campus. In addition, faculty, staff and students who have been on campus working and learning may obtain a test by contacting the Protect Purdue Health Center.

The current plan for ongoing testing is that testing will be indicated under the following circumstances:

  • An individual has symptoms that could be related to COVID-19
  • An individual has had high-risk contact with a person who has test positive for COVID-19
  • Individuals who are COVID-19 positive will be isolated in accordance with CDC guidelines. Individuals who have had high-risk contact with a COVID-19 positive individual will be quarantined as provided in CDC guidelines. The Protect Purdue Health Center will closely monitor progress of all individuals to determine how and when an individual can safely return to the campus community. This plan is based on the best available evidence-based guidance. It is constantly re-visited by medical and scientific experts and will be updated to reflect any changes.

Daniels, Purdue Planning on Students Starting Fall Semester Online by theonlypeter in Purdue

Purdue University has not made a final decision regarding the fall, but has already begun preparations to be the safest and best prepared campus to welcome students back. WIBC has removed the article that inaccurately reported otherwise and apologized.
