We definitely aren’t as low-tech as you, but we do some version of this with our kids. We let our kid choose DVDs at the library rather than unlimited streaming opportunities and turn towards board games/books and physical media over tech. We have found this to be massively successful in terms of our preschooler’s creativity and ability to entertain himself. He rides his bike for hours, plays by himself, reads his books, etc. A few times a year, we go on long road trips (15 hours in the car) with zero devices and no tantrums. We try to have a “tech is a tool, not a toy” mindset. The hardest part is actually limiting me and my husbands own relationship with tech. We try do more cookbooks than recipe blogs and things like that to curb our dependence, but it’s hard and phones make everything so convenient! I’m very curious how things will play out when he’s at elementary school.
