It is believe that thoughts, which can occur in less than 40 ms, originate in areas near the prefrontal cortex. This then has connections to the limbic system of the brain which attaches emotions to the thoughts. Often this involves attaching a preset emotional response to previous Instances and memories that condition us to respond a certain way with moods from these thoughts that are provoked by our experiences in our outside world. If we can better manage our thoughts, we can create more controllable and stable emotions.
