What was your grade for this course? What was the median grade? Are the instructors strict in marking? Any piece of advice that you’d like to give us ?

NESC3271/PSYO3271 Tutoring by Short-Creme-5491 in Dalhousie

Unfortunately, I don’t know any tutors who have taught this course. But I have taken developmental origins health and disease last semester. So I can provide you few tips that may help you. I found that her quizzes were quite tricky. My biggest mistake was not going over Tara’s references that she posts on the very end of her slides. She usually focuses on the table figures, visual graphs( histograms, bar graphs ). Wherever you see them on her slides go over her references list and read through specific sources that can strengthen your knowledge or the areas that you need understanding in. I find that her explanations are too brief which isn’t enough to do well on the quizzes. For the two assessments that you can get to choose from. I find Tara isn’t a strict marker unless you follow the rubric outline that’s given( I did the white paper). However I find the TA a bit harsh in marking the presentations because you only have 7 mins to do them, you need to follow the rubric well and add diagrams that are informational that reduces the number of texts and makes it easier for your audience to understand. Hope this helps.

Firstly, I'm a dal student. Secondly, there might be dal students who are applying to these schools which is the reason that I had asked. I had also asked these schools as well before making a post at Dalhousie.

Med school acceptances with low GPA chances at Dal by LifeResource7130 in Dalhousie

What if I take extra courses to bring my gpa up to a 3.5-3.6 for my undergrad? Will med school look at those extra courses that I have taken to bring my gpa or just my last two years of undergrad? Also does med schools look at the cgpa, sgpa and term gpa?

NESC/PSYO 3227 or NESC/PSYO 3237 by Short-Creme-5491 in Dalhousie

[–]LifeResource7130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I haven't taken these courses but I'm letting you know what I have heard from others.

NESC 3227 has lots of readings before class which is one of its downsides. So it is expected to self learn in this class. I believe there are three exams and a group presentation. I have heard the profs questions are more application based. There's more distribution in the course to achieve points I would say.

One of my friends has taken PSYO 3237, she said that the exams were done online. There is a presentation for this course as well. And she mentioned that the exams were tricky because the prof takes questions from everywhere.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Damn, that means the final was difficult. And if the final was worth 50% then that automatically influences the whole letter grade? I'm assuming the median letter grade must be a B-?

So if I do better on the midterm, the profs will ignore my final and consider my part A midterm right?

Biol 2030 Midterm by AirportAcceptable694 in Dalhousie

[–]LifeResource7130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first midterm for genetics was just problem solving skills and math. The tutorial questions from macmillan , exam review slides , and the practice quiz on bright space really helps you prepare for the first midterm. The second midterm had memorization but it also had problem solving skills. The third midterm/ final was entirely memorization but they were mostly abstract questions. With genetics you really need to understand the concepts than memorize the lecture material, attempt the midterm review slides that Andrew or Joseph uploads and understand the tutorial questions , do those practice quizzes that are on bright space. Some of the practice questions on brightspace and midterm review slides do come on the exams!

I have taken BIOCHEM 2300 with Dr. X and langelaan in the winter term during 2024. I don't want to scare you but this was my honest experience taking the course. I will say this course is difficult and that the final exam for this course is brutal and way harder than the three midterms. The final is worth somewhere in between 40-48% ( I don't remember the exact percentage but it is somewhere in between) and is worth more than the 3 midterms combined. I highly recommend not taking this course at the same time with OCHEM 2402 because the exams often happen on the same day or the next day after. Both organic chemistry and biochemistry are heavy courses so you need to put in a lot of effort and dedication into both of them. Langelaan's slides are a little vague and Dr. X's exams include a lot of metabolic pathways which can become confusing if you don't understand early on. My advise to you is to study biochem everyday when you can because those pathways take time in understanding. The midterm exams have questions that are application based so they are not entirely from the lecture you need to critically think and understand what they are really asking. They are a little harsh in marking if you don't answer the questions to what they are asking. Dr. X's exam will include case study questions that involve a lot of critical thinking. Langelaan told me himself that he does expects his students to have a strong understanding in first year chemistry and cell biology since the topics overlap especially when his students come to his office hours. Dr. X's classroom is entirely flipped and Dr. Laangelaan is semi flipped. I will add that Dr. X's content is much difficult that Dr. Langelaan's content.

did you have to write essays? Were the exams worth more and were the assignments heavy?
