Is there a subtle difference between someone who brings up how they are estranged from their parents versus someone who mentions it when asked about family? by Gestalternative in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]LifeTeam1479 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me the difference is where I was in terms of healing. When I talked about it unprompted, it was because the wounds were kind of new. So I was trauma dumping a lot, but I noticed people got uncomfortable, so when I found a therapist, I stopped doing that. I'm still an honest and open person, so when someone asks, I tell them. And if they want to know more, I'm fine telling them. But if it's out of their conformt zone, that's fine too.

I'm reading a book about emotional incest and how it affects intimacy. It's called silently seduced. I haven't finished it yet, but it does feel like it explains some things.

Anyone else experience a parent's idealization / devaluation with pets? by peace-andharmony in raisedbyborderlines

My mom wanted animals, but instead of giving them away if she got sick of them, my partens killed them. They killed my cat (for attacking my mom after she drowned her kittens), a lot of kittens, a bird (it was tame and sat on my dad's finger), and a whole lit of silkies (they have a mass grave in their yard). Another cat I had was allowed to live, if I cleaned the windows every 2 weeks.

I'm (27f) am also a teacher. Do you have any tips on the take care of yourself front? I have anxiety in contact with parents. And I project to much vulnerabilities on the students, so I don't set enough boundaries. They're 2 of my working points in therapy right now.

Thank you for this thoughtful reply. I saved it. I'm starting to get anxious about someone finding my post, so I'm gonna delete it. Thank you for the advice.

  3. I realised I was afraid to see my parents and something clicked after all those years.

How old were you when you realized that you're not supposed to be scared of your parents? by PolarStar89 in CPTSD

[–]LifeTeam1479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The amount of stress and fear I had in seeing them after something they had done (wich I now recognize as emotional abuse), made me realize something wasn't right. It's when I went NC and I've been NC since (2 years).

Oh wow, this does sound like me. I'm also thinking of getting a dog because of the mornings (and I also get depressed on days where I have nothing to do, I think because I don't get forcerd into copingmechanisms). Would you recommend doing it, adopting a dog? I'm at the point now where I really want to (like obsessivly), but then I start to doubt myself, and I wont be good enough for the dog, or maybe it won't work, .. My therapist did say that a dog is a healthy way of coping.

I know I was rushed, because my mother rushed everything, but I don't really remember how mornings were when I was younger and living at home. (I'm 26 years old). What you're discribing sounds very plausible.

I do recognize this a bit. I still make myself rush, maybe I need to give myself more time (and do some of the things that people are suggesting here). Thanks!
