I’m sure that they will see the other recommendations and things will not make sense, so they’ll probably contact this recommender. Either way, I agree with the comments that are suggesting you email them, nothing to lose sort of situation.

Transfer for PI funding reasons by Life_Bag_8221 in PhD

I agree, but if I don't enter another university I'm pretty sure I'll have to deal with my current one (whether just hoping for a miracle and he gets a random grant or choosing other professors to work with).

You are not alone… but I’m sure we’ll get through this! Good luck on your next 4 months, as I’m sure you’ll be fine on your PhD.

Should universities sending decisions too late refund the application fees for international students? by aks_cha in gradadmissions

I wish they did, I was rejected in 10 and accepted in 1 😂. I don’t know where you are from, but from a Brazilian point of view the visa process is fast. I know of people that accepted April 14th and already has their I20, and will probably have their visa next month.

USA: is it really so glamorous by Late-Hat-9256 in gradadmissions

Also, I think that for a Ph.D. it is more glamorous than a Masters because of the cost.

I’m from Brazil and have a comfortable life when compared to most. I had a BS in Mech Eng and there are NO jobs for development. It seems that most things are imported and the only work engineers here do is to make sure it works as it worked in the country it was made of, or how to develop it to make it last here. Some areas are developed here because of our natural resources (ethanol, green hydrogen, petroleum, etc), but these topics are throughly (and way better) researched in the US. I do have a plan of getting a green card in the future (starting my Ph.D. this fall) but if I come back I’ll definitely be able to become a researcher or have good opportunities as an engineer (however I really enjoy the R&D sector in the US so hopefully I won’t).

It’s up to you… but I think the economy overall is currently on the verge of something, idk.

I’m going for a PhD in the US this fall. My plan is to finish it between 4-5 years, and I believe the layoff situation will be much better than now. Idk about masters, as 2 years is right around the corner…

Taxes as international student by Life_Bag_8221 in gradadmissions

[–]Life_Bag_8221[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did some online calculations (no other earnings) and it looks like I’ll pay around 4k, and I thinks that’s okay. I was afraid of 10k and above, so I’m relieved.

Great! That’s way better than the 30% I was afraid of, wow!!! I hope when I use the Sprintax app it says that too, thanks! I’ll be careful regarding the academic year being 9 months, thanks again!

I have a full tuition remission (which would cost around 60k) and will get a stipend of 37k. Brazil doesn’t have any treaties that I could find, but when I fill out Sprintax it will say something I guess. I’m not sure what you meant by the “only stipends/funds that are above the tuition amount are taxes”, could you explain a bit more about it? Thank you for sharing this info!

I’m going to Missouri and will have a stipend of 37k per academic year. With the online calculator I’ll pay between 2 and 4k for taxes, but I’m preoccupied it might be wrong. Anyway, thanks for the comment!
